RIN'S P.O.V
"Sero, we're gonna need your tape to catch people if they fall."
"Sure thing, Mr. Okumura!"
"And Mineta, slow it down with your quirk."
"Yes, sir." I don't know what else I expected. But, of course, as soon as the four of us come stumbling towards Yukio, he's already giving out orders to try and delay this massive demon. Only, instead of sporting a calm, collected look on his face, instead, his eyes seem like they're quivering. Which means... He wasn't expecting this. This wasn't planned.
"Rin! Finally," he sighs the moment he sets his sights on me, suddenly grabbing my collar and yanking me away from Kaminari's side. I only barely manage to catch myself mid-stumble. "What did you do?"
"Nothing! This wasn't me!" I exclaim, flinching when a booming roar rips through the training arena, grabbing my twin's attention and tearing it away from me. Hold up, why does he think this is my fault? Does he honestly think I would summon a demon like this? I don't even know how to do that, and I sure as hell wouldn't even if I did! I don't want to show off that damn much. Just who does he think I am?!
"Rin, if this is some stupid stunt to make you look better than me in front of my class-"
"-WHAT?! Is that really what matters right now?"
"Did you bring this demon here?"
"No! You know I can't do that sort of stuff!"
"No, Rin. I don't know that! I have no idea what Satan did to you in Gehenna!" Even though the ground is still churning, and the demon is still omitting rolling, thunderous growls, it feels like the air has gone totally still. Silence settles in, and the sting of his words forces me back a pace. You've gotta be kidding me. After all this time... He still doesn't trust me. He still thinks Satan's inside my head.
"We don't have time for family drama, Mr. Okumura. That demon is a priority, I suggest you focus on getting rid of it," Mr. Aizawa quickly interjects before the atmosphere can dip any more than it already has. Of course, my brother doesn't say another word- he just switches off his emotions the same way he always does, and turns his attention elsewhere. Leaving me with the repercussions of his words. I can save his life. I can protect an entire class. But nothing will ever stop him from doubting me. Or being scared of me.
"Rin? Hey, don't listen to him," Kaminari softly hums. I didn't even hear him approach, and I barely feel his fingertips slipping into my palm. "C'mon. Let's show him how wrong he is and kill that thing, yeah?" Finally, everything starts to sound a little less muffled. The thudding of the demon's footsteps becomes more crisp, and it's almost as though I can hear every individual shard of glass hit the ground.
He's right. Man, I need to get out of my own head.
"Right. Bakugou, Kirishima, with me. I'm gonna need both of you."
"Don't order me around! You're not our teacher anymore."
"C'mon, Bakugou. Let's do as he says," Kirishima anxiously suggests, looping an arm around the angry blonde to try and settle his ever-present rage. Thankfully, it works- the fire eating up his eyes seems to simmer down to a smouldering ember, what you could almost mistake for a calm washing over his features. Of course, the scowl sticks.
"Fine. What do you need?"
~
Is this crazy? Yes. Am I going to regret it? Probably. But, nine times out of ten, when I've tried to use one of my own plans to deal with a demon, it's worked. Which is why Bakugou, Kirishima and I are charging towards the Goliath at full speed. Ignoring Yukio's yells, which is probably going to become a common trend for us.
And, though I hate to leave Kaminari behind, the last thing I want to do is get him caught up in this. Bakugou can get out of the way quick enough, and Kirishima can harden his skin to tough out the blaze. So, using my flames at as high a power as I can manage shouldn't be a problem. Sure, I've never burnt any of them before, but I definitely don't wanna even try to risk it. At least with these two, I know for sure there's no danger.
"Soon as we get close enough, Bakugou, you're gonna launch Kirishima with an explosion. He'll harden his skin so the blast doesn't burn him. He'll also be carrying me, so he can throw me towards the Goliath. As soon as he lets go of me, I want you to both bolt in the other direction, and make sure everyone else is as far away from the demon as possible, got it?"
"Got it," Kirishima mutters, turning his skin into rigid rock whenever debris threatens to crash down onto us, whilst also managing to swipe me up at the same time. This has to work. It just has to.
"On my signal-" I call out, watching every movement the great beast makes. I don't think it's even noticed we're here- it's too focused on causing as much destruction as possible, so it seems. Just like every other demon we've met, all it wants it to ruin everything around it. So I guess I've gotta be the only demon who doesn't. "NOW!"
I can always count on these guys to be ready at all times. Barely even a second passes before Bakugou detonates the sweat slicking his arms, the huge blast catapulting Kirishima and I into the air, directly towards the Goliath. And the redhead waits until we're right at the peak of our launch before using every ounce of his strength to toss me towards the demon. Now it's just up to them to get out of here as fast as they can.
Thankfully, I manage to make out their silhouettes tailing it back towards the edge of the arena from here. Still, I wait until I'm certain they're completely out of range before letting my body erupt into a frenzy of blue flames. In an engulfing explosion, not unlike one of Bakugou's, the fire swells and expands around the huge demon, illuminating the entire arena in a sapphire hue. I wish I could hear the roaring of the blaze. But, instead, all I hear is a deafening shriek that threatens to burst my eardrums as the Goliath crumples to the ground under the force of my flames.
On top of it all, it feels as though every ounce of my strength is draining from me the more I pump out this hellfire. But I have to... Keep going. Don't stop- just... Just keep it together, Rin. You've got this. You can protect them now. You're... You're strong enough.
But I'm falling. Did I kill it? Is it gone? I keep falling. I must have gotten rid of it- if I hadn't, I'd have landed on it by now. I need to... Stay awake. If I don't, I'll hit the ground. Would a fall from this high up kill me? But it's so hard to keep my eyes open. Darkness is pulsing around the edges of my vision, creeping further and further inwards.
Before it clogs my sight completely, however, I spot them. In a flash of green lightning, and a blast of blistering smoke. I can always count on Bakugou and Deku to catch me, huh? Some things never change.
