Marlann opened the door to her dorm when there was a knock, smiling when she saw DJ stood there and DJ smiled, but his expression changed to one of awe when he saw Kath stood just inside.
"So, how does he look, Marlann?" Kath asked breathlessly, making DJ smile and Marlann beamed.
"He cleans up well." Marlann complimented, letting him inside and she held back her want to either squeal or tease him when he walked right over to Kath and held onto her free hand so she'd know he was close and she instantly blushed when he kissed her cheek.
"You're beautiful," DJ said softly.
"But why aren't you at home?" DJ asked.
"Last minute girly day," Marlann said, Kath instantly grateful that she kept to her word about not mentioning what happened or their conversation. DJ chuckled, giving Kath's hand a gentle squeeze.
"You ready to go?" He asked and Kath smiled.
"Yes... I'm nervous, though." She admitted and her breathing got heavier as she felt DJ's face closer to hers, feeling his breath against her cheek.
"Me too." He whispered into her ear, keeping hold of her hand and they both said goodbye to Marlann before DJ led the way towards the elevator, but Kath was still using her white cane. "Your cane matches your outfit," DJ said with a smile and Kath laughed.
"For once, I can make it look like a fashion accessory." Kath played along, making DJ laugh. He liked that she could joke about her disability, he could see himself with her for a long time - he missed her whenever they weren't together and he'd only known her for a week.
"My car is right here," DJ said softly, placing the hand he was holding onto the car so she could feel for the car door and he held his hand slightly above her head to protect her in case she banged her head on the roof of the car getting in, but he smiled when she was able to get in all by herself. Kath would never admit that it was the first time she was able to even open the car door by herself when she was with her new friends. DJ walked around the car, getting into the driver's seat and he reached over, holding her hand as he started to drive.
"Are you gonna tell me where we're going?" She asked and DJ chuckled.
"I thought we'd go out to dinner and a movie," DJ said and Kath's eyes widened.
"Really?" DJ chuckled at how excited she seemed. "Yeah, why? Is it too corny?"
"No, I just... I haven't done those things since the accident." Kath admitted and it was DJ's turn to be shocked.
"But your accident was when you were five! How have you not gone to a restaurant since then?" DJ asked and Kath sighed.
"I've asked, but I guess my parents prefer eating at home and we don't really watch much TV... being with you guys was the first time I was watching movies for a while." Kath said honestly and DJ squeezed her hand.
"Well, I'm honored to be the first person to take you to those places since your accident," DJ said with a small smile that Kath returned.
"I just can't believe you wanna be with me... you could have any girl you wanted, and you choose me to take out on a date? This isn't some... trick, is it?" Kath asked.
"Why do you think I'm tricking you?"
"Because you're so kind and funny, you're the most considerate guy I've ever met and... and I'm just some blind girl who doesn't stand a chance at doing anything." Kath breathed.
"See, that's where you're wrong," DJ said, his voice completely serious. "I asked you on a date because I like you and I know you think you're not worth anything because of your disability, but I don't care that you're blind. I don't care if people stare at us, I don't care if you never get this surgery and we spend the rest of our lives like this... I asked you out because I want to be with you, not out of pity or because I'm playing a cruel joke on you... I want to be with you." DJ urged and Kath cracked a wide smile. "Do you believe me?"
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but... I do believe you. I trust you."
"Good, and that in itself means the world to me," DJ said, kissing the back of her hand as he kept driving them towards the restaurant.
DJ led Kath inside the restaurant, grateful that their reserved table wasn't too far into the crowded and busy dining area.
"Would you, um... like some assistance with the menu?" The waiter asked, obviously nervous but DJ shook his head, speaking before Kath could.
"No, we'll be fine," DJ said, seeing the waiter look relieved as he walked away and DJ pulled a piece of paper out of his pocket, placing it in front of her. "I went to the printing place today, and I did that for you." He said and Kath placed her hands on the papers DJ put in front of her, her eyes instantly filling with tears.
He'd gotten the restaurant menu online, and he'd gotten it printed in Braille for her.
