Inspired by the song 'Canyon Moon' from the album 'Fine Line'

It was hard to give a shit about anything when you're with Harry. It's like he repels all stress and worry, and common sense, but it's best not to think about that. There is no one more happy and carefree than him, and it's one of the many things you love about your best friend.

You're just settling into bed, the clock reads two-thirty when there's a soft tapping at your window. You look over to see Harry standing on your roof, a grin spread across his face. He gestures for you to come over so you throw back the sheets and open the window for him.

"Come on, we're going on an adventure." He whispers, leaning into your room. "Grab a jumper and let's go." Harry disappears, leaving you standing in the middle of your room, confused. You sigh, rolling your eyes, and grab an old knitted sweater off the floor, the once vibrant purple now faded to a lavender hue. Pulling it on, you're careful not to make any sound as you sneak out the window and climb down the garden trellis. Harry helps you into his car and then he drives. And drives. And drives.

With the windows down and the night breeze nipping at your face and tugging at your hair, you watch the stars pass overhead. The car ride is silent, but the feeling floating between you and Harry, it's different somehow... Harry pulls off the main road onto an old forested trail and you hold your breath.

"If we get murdered-" you begin, peering into the trees, every shadow looks like something it isn't. It's eerie.

"We're not going to get murdered, just trust me okay." Harry puts the car in park and gets out, you do the same, hurrying to catch up to him. You follow him, steps too loud against the leaf-scattered ground. At one point, you stumble and Harry holds out his hand to help. You take it, righting yourself, but he doesn't let go. The trees get thicker and the stars begin to disappear, leaving you and Harry in almost complete darkness. The only light to guide you is that of the moon that glows proudly overhead.

Just as you start to think you should turn back, the trees open onto a rocky bank, towering canyons on either side, and a lake.. A small pier stands strong against the soft flowing of the current. The reflection of the night sky in the lake sparkles, almost like the lake itself is full of stars. Harry takes your hand and leads you to the end of the pier and sits down, taking off his shoes and letting his legs dangle off the edge into the water. You do the same and gasp at the sudden coldness of the water that ripples around your ankles.

The two of you sit on the pier beneath the stars for hours, losing track of time in the words you exchange. You laugh together over the dumbest jokes imaginable, everytime you try to gulp down breaths the two of you disappear into another wave of chuckles. And for one, fleeting moment, you have the urge to kiss him. It's so sudden and so strong that you pause entirely, laughter dying instantly.

"You okay?" Harry asks between the last of his chuckling, the light of the moon refracting in his emerald eyes. You almost do it. You almost lean in and press your mouth to his.

But you don't. Instead you pull off your hoodie.

"I'm going swimming." You slip your pyjama pants off and stand on the edge of the pier.

"But it's going to be freezing-"

You don't let Harry finish his sentence, you just leap and hope for the best. He's right though, it is freezing. Your body tenses up at the sudden change in temperatures and your teeth chatter. When you breach the surface again, you hear a splash and turn to see Harry hit the water. When he emerges, chestnut curls dripping, he grins at you.

"This is so dumb," he says, swimming wading towards you. He can probably touch the bottom, but you can't. When you're face-to-face, Harry stares into your eyes and you pray to whatever higher power that he can't see inside your mind. The two of you stay silent, the soft rippling of the water the only sound. Then, Harry's hands find your waist and he pulls you closer. Out of instinct, you wrap your legs around him.

"What are you doing?" Your voice comes out in barely a whisper and you're not entirely sure you're breathing.

"This," Harry says as he leans down and kisses you.

It's like everything falls into place. The puzzle piece you didn't know you needed found its home in your heart, and you didn't realize until now that you've wanted him for a while. And no matter how old you get, no matter how many different things you experience as you grow...

You will never, ever, forget the night under the canyon moon...
