Inspired by the song 'Walking In The Wind' from the album 'Made In The A.M'
"Congratulations, class of twenty-nineteen!!" The principal yells and the entire graduating cohort bursts into an uproar of cheers, yourself included. As you throw your caps, you turn to see your best friend, Harry, grinning like an idiot. He runs to you and tackles you in a bear hug.
"We did it! We're done!" He cries, squeezing you. You squeeze back, holding on so tight, afraid to let him go. You're scared that everything is going to slip away and you'll never see him again. And although you'll never tell him, you've been in love with him for years, and you don't want him to disappear. Being his friend is enough, it has to be enough.
"What's wrong," he asks, stepping back to look you in the eyes. You think about blurting it then, just shouting it from the rooftops to get it out there and get it over with, but you don't.
"Nothing. Nothing." You shake your head, cracking a smile. "Let's go to a party tonight."
---
Seven hours later, you're in someone's house with a killer headache. The thumping in your head is equivalent to that of the bass booming through the house. You haven't had anything to drink, you're just tired and more than a little annoyed. Someone had spilled their drink on you and you're currently hiding out in the bathroom, shirtless, washing your top in the sink. The people downstairs, your fellow classmates, are completely off their faces but they're having a good time. In between one song and the next, you hear Harry's deep voice calling for shots and chuckle to yourself. Sitting on the edge of the bathtub, you let your shirt soak.
But then you give up completely, the shirt won't be dry for hours, so you sneak out the hallway and run to the nearest bedroom. Thankfully it isn't occupied. You step into the wardrobe and turn on the light. There are a bunch of shirts on hangers so you grab a plain black one and slip it over your head. Tying a knot in the middle to make it look less baggy, you head back downstairs.
Trying to soothe your pounding headache, you slip out into the backyard and away from all the music. The stars are particularly bright and you can't help but gaze up at them in wonder.
"Hey," Harry appears out of nowhere, hands in his pockets. "Stargazing I see."
"Yeah, the music was too loud."The two of you fall silent as you continue to stare at the stars, finding maps in the constellations.
"You okay?" Harry asks, the slight slur in his words giving away his intoxication. Knowing Harry as you do, he wouldn't be able to remember anything in the morning.
"No."
"Why not? What's wrong?"
If he wasn't going to remember it in the morning, what would be the harm in telling him now?
"I'm in love with my best friend," your shoulders droop as you look anywhere but at Harry. His steps shuffle through the grass as he comes up beside you, placing a hand on your shoulder.
"But, I'm your best friend."
You turn to him then, his green eyes sparkling in the starlight.
"I know." Before you have time to process the truth you revealed, Harry steps forward and crashes his lips into yours. You want to enjoy the kiss, you really do, you've been wanting it for years. But you can't enjoy something that will be forgotten tomorrow morning, washed away by sleep. Stepping away, there are tears in your eyes.
"I think I'm gonna head home," you whisper, turning away.
"What? Why? You can't just say something like that then leave." Harry says. You turn back to him, shoving your hands into the pockets of your jeans.
"You won't remember any of this in the morning, Harry. We're going to go to separate universities, you'll pursue music and I'll write my books. It doesn't matter what I want, not when we'll never see each other again." Without looking back, you leave.
"Of course we'll see each other! We've known each other for years!" Harry calls out, but you ignore him and continue, making your way back through the crowded house and out the front door. You're halfway down the long driveway, keys jingling in your hands, and more than ready to go to sleep when you hear the crunch of gravel not too far behind you.
"And what about what I want?"
At those words, your heart practically leaps out of your throat, but you push it back down and turn to him.
"You're drunk."
"I'm not. I swear. I've had three drinks, that's it."
I narrow my eyes at him, unsure of whether to believe him. "Well Harry, enlighten me. What is it that you want?"
Harry takes a deep breath, his green eyes meet yours once again.
"You."
