The bell signalling the end of the day rang through the school building, the shrill sound gyrating on my frail nerves after having not slept nearly enough last night thanks to the unexpected visitor.
My overtired brain, plagued with worry and anxiety at the mere thought of dealing with them today thrummed painfully in my head but thankfully, the school day ended without seeing or bumping into any of those assholes. Nevertheless, I had to remind myself to remain cautious; I wasn't safe yet and wouldn't be until I found a concrete way for them to leave me alone. Until then, I would continue to avoid them as much as possible and try to forget this whole ordeal, no matter how impossible that task seemed.
Just as I was about to leave the building and get into my car home, the nasal voice of the secretary rang through the corridors.
"Students participating in the dance try-outs should make their way to the pitch now."
No one seemed to pay any attention to the announcement and people continued their conversations, oblivious, as they strolled down the corridors. A thrill, however, shot through me.
Without a second thought, I turned and started walking towards the pitch, a smile gracing my lips.
There was no way I'd be able to stop the attack from the boys now with my limited knowledge of them but I had other people on my case that I could deal with. The mean girl from yesterday was on the dance team, and I knew my presence would infuriate her. A little payback, a taste of her own medicine, would be immensely satisfying.
My smile turned menacing.
Although my anger was mainly towards Dorran and the boys, sometimes the silver linings really did count. I'd make sure they did.
Right before I entered the pitch, I pulled out my phone and texted Lennox that I was heading to dance tryouts and that he could come and watch if he wanted. I missed my best friend; we didn't see each other nearly as much anymore and he did like to watch me dance so I thought why not?
I knew it wasn't the wisest of decisions to invite Lennox to East Bridge but there were no rules against other school students coming here and I was feeling rebellious. Plus, Lennox could look after himself.
As I walked onto the pitch, I noticed the dance team, aspiring dancers, and even the football team. Given that the dance or cheerleading team typically performed at games, it wasn't surprising to see them sharing the space.
As I navigated through the crowd, I encountered the usual glares from the football players. By now, their hostile looks had grown tiresome, but I ignored them and continued my path. However, one particular stare caught my attention.
It was Dorran's dark-haired friend, glaring at me from across the pitch with pure contempt. While it wasn't the most welcoming sight, I'd prefer his hateful gaze to Dorran's any day. I still winced internally, recalling last night's altercation.
"Marcelo," the football coach shouted, and he took off, not sparing me another glance.
So, his name was Marcelo?
I had to keep that in mind.
I scanned the football players to check if Dorran and Blondie were here and I was relieved to see no sign of them. One, I could handle. Three would be interesting, especially with the silver-eyed monster.
As I got closer to the dance team, they all turned around to watch me and I smiled in dark glee at the sight of the mean, pretty girl from lunch turn red. I knew she'd hate me turning up and look at that! The exact reaction I wanted.
