Without meaning, my hands pushed Darcy's body behind mine as the ruinous sound of danger prevailed, bringing about a tense atmosphere among the six of us. As I realised what I had just done, I cursed at myself but kept her behind me. I could hate her but still not want her to die; that was reasonable.

I didn't have time to think about it at the moment though as my ears perked up and my body thrummed in anticipation of what was coming. I stood there, analysing and calculating as the sounds got louder, coming closer to us and sounding like a dozen footsteps that brought along with them menace and threat. The darkening skies amplified this, making every little breach of the silence seem dangerous.

I stared at the surroundings, trying to match the movement to the increasing noise as my body prepared for the upcoming danger, ready for the fight, almost hungry for it after not getting the violence that I needed from Mathew. I didn't know what was happening but there was an undeniable warning running through my blood that told me something was going to happen.

After a while, there was silence once again like before but the dark forewarning that remained inside of me told me not to let my guard down, that the threat had not yet gone away and in the next moment as I continued to stare off into the darkness, waiting with my body as tense as a statue, I saw a slither of movement by the building opposite us, confirming what I had believed.

I narrowed my eyes in an attempt to see what it was or more likely who had come to join us but the darkness coated whatever it was, not helping me at all.

After a moment though, just before I was about to start backing up, not liking the gut instinct inside of me, a foot came out of the shadows and soon a whole body stepped outwards along with it.

And it was obvious that this was not Darcy's stalker. Where the stalker was lithe and almost with skinny strength, the man in front of us was the opposite. I was tall and yet he had quite a few inches on me and his muscles were filled, packed with years of hard training and almost the width of a tree trunk. His face was the thing that was the most distraught with his heavy beard that covered his aged face in shadows and his eyes even from all the way here that promised us nothing good.

I blocked off all the emotions and looked at this situation from an unbiased point of view so I could find a way out of this. He was only one man and although he looked dangerous, it was one against six and I liked our chances. But the belief that we would be fine died in my chest as I saw more movement ahead of us and near that man. And before I knew it, several feet, several dozen pairs of feet in fact, stepped into the clearing behind the first man, revealing themselves from the darkened buildings.

I concealed my surprise and my disbelief as I stared at the new arrivals, all of whom were older and buffer men as dread coursed through my veins. It hadn't stopped there because, in the next second, I heard commotion from behind me and looking back quickly, I saw that there were more of the same type of men behind us too.

My blood ran cold as I realised that we were surrounded, trapped in a circle of venom, ensuring that we wouldn't make it out. I was good but I wasn't that good to take on twenty men who all looked ready for a fight. There was nothing that I could do but wait as they continued to glare at us and us them all whilst I tried to figure a way out of this, an explanation for who they were and why they were surrounding us.

The tension in the air was insufferable but I maintained a blank look as I stared at the men, ready to exploit their weaknesses and fight to the death so be it. I never looked weak even if there wasn't a chance that I'd survive.

With one look at Archer and Marcelo, they had the same looks on their faces. I didn't bother looking at the other guys but hoping they'd stand up and pull their weight. I wasn't worried for myself and never had been but for some reason, I felt the need to survive.

I pushed the sentiment from my mind. It was as if I had been pushing a lot of things from my mind tonight. It had never been this bad. I looked around me again, trying to gain anything and I realised after analysing the situation that the man who had come out first was the leader of whatever this was. Despite his height and his burly weight, he had an air about him. It wasn't the size of him that had the impact, it was the way he held himself.

I examined him more closely and he examined me back, his gaze scouring every inch of us and after beats of silence, he opened his mouth to speak and I wondered what he was going to say, how this was going to play out. I'd never been without a game plan in my life and recently it seemed as if it was all I was doing, acting in the moment.

Before any words could come out of his mouth, to my shock and horror, Darcy pushed past me, her hands sending a shiver of warmth down my back as she did and then proceeded to stand in front of me, in front of all of us. We had all moved into a protective shield around her, trying to hide her away from the danger of these leering men, knowing how badly this shit could end if they had caught sight of her and so I grabbed to pull her back again. But the strength in her arm when she shrugged out of her hold was impressive.

I tried again and she glared back at me, "Stop."

I didn't care what she wanted and I was about to do it again when the strangest, most unpredictable thing happened. On the dangerous man's face that only held an impenetrable glare, as his gaze landed on Darcy and saw who it was, the malice on his face disappeared completely and in its place a smile appeared, showcasing his dimples. I stared confusedly at the sight. His smile had contrasted so greatly against the darkness that had been before, making me almost believe that I had imagined the whole thing.

"Darcy, my girl!" He shouted.

I stared in shock, having never been so surprised in my life as I watched bewildered, not able to comprehend the turn of events. I was so sure that this was going to end badly for the lot of us and yet, the danger of the situation had disappeared just as quickly as it came.

Darcy took steps forward until she was right in front of him and before I knew it, she was in his arms, giving the man a hug. The guys around me were in a state of shock too and we could do nothing but watch on. A second ago, there was a promise of bloodshed in the air and in the next moment? Absolutely nothing. How the hell did she know this guy?

"I missed you, girl," the leader cooed at her as if she was his baby and she smiled up at him like an angel.

Several biker-looking guys came out from their positions to greet her and everyone else seemed to relax, the prospect of fighting gone with the wisp of air that had passed through us. Without another glance in our direction, the leader put his beefy arm around her and they began walking, chatting together as if they were old friends whilst I just tried to explain this situation in my head. The majority started moving forward with them to wherever they were going but we still stood there, baffled at the turn of events, needing time to process what had just happened. The guys behind us moved forward until they were right behind us, then motioned with their faces to start walking.

"What the fuck just happened?" Lennox asked no one specifically and I couldn't help but agree.

What the fuck. I had come here expecting answers and all I got was more questions.
