I checked in with the receptionist, a short woman with vibrant purple hair who clearly wasn't thrilled to see me. After a brief registration, I begrudgingly made my way to my first class.

But as I got to the door and heard the slight chatter coming from within, I decided that the last thing I wanted to do right now was head inside. I was already slightly late, thanks to the process of acquiring all my documents, and I didn't quite fancy all the stares I would get from walking in now.

So instead of going into the lesson, I decided to change course and head outside.

If my mother found out I was already skipping class on my first day, I'd never hear the end of it but I honestly couldn't care at the moment. I needed a break and it was hilarious how I was already feeling like this and it was only first period.

As I opened the school doors, I was glad to see it was very empty outside. Less people meant less stares, less drama and more peace for me. But as I began to walk down the steps, the doors closing behind me, I noticed with displeasure that the guy from earlier with the dark eyes stood at the edge of the car park with another boy, seemingly in heated discussion. Without wanting to draw their attention, I moved away from them quietly, trying to lurk in the shadows so I didn't have to deal with anyone else, especially that prick.

I walked around the school building until I found a quiet spot that I presumed was for teachers' smoke breaks, glad to not have bumped into anybody else.

Choosing a seat in the corner, the thick shadows instantly covered me, making me feel more hidden and at peace. I finally allowed myself to take a deep breath and breathe in this moment of secluded privacy. One that I had needed so desperately.

I got out my phone and saw that I had a text message.

Lennox:

Love and miss you

The message brought a shiver all over my body. It was far too similar to the one I received this morning, making me internally cringe.

But I pushed that unwanted thought from my mind and focused on what really mattered. I was glad that Lennox had texted me. Even though I had only been gone a couple of hours, I already missed him and wished that he was here with me.

He was truly my one best friend and being here, stuck where I was the worst person in everyone's eyes, I couldn't help but really feel the distance. But what good would it do to think about this and those jerks? I wasn't mentally prepared today to get stuck in a cycle of depressing thoughts. Today was not the day and right now was definitely not the moment.

With aims to distract myself and pass the time, I busied myself with training my gaze on my surroundings, attempting to find something interesting I could focus on.

Before long, I looked to the ground and noticed that on the concrete floor, someone had written something with what seemed like a sharp object.

Right by my shoe, there was a sentence engraved.

Finchley & Granite Hill SCUM.

My hands clenched in fists as I read the rude words that had obviously been written by someone from East Bridge, reiterating the rhetoric that characterised this town - hostility towards outsiders who did not belong.

The story states that this rivalry business in Richview started about twenty years ago based on an argument between the three richest men who once owned the area. They decided to split the town into their own three shares, apparently dividing the people with them.
