My bedroom lights flashed harshly as my mum tried to wake me up. I squeezed my eyes shut, but the bright lights and the sun streaming through my window made me give in. I banged on the wall a few times and she stopped flashing my lights. I could feel my phone vibrating somewhere in the mess of my blankets, and when I finally found it saw that Arthur had messaged me. He was already on his way to pick me up for school.
Shit, I thought, I wasn't even dressed and he didn't live far. I scrambled to find something clean enough to wear and grabbed my backpack, case, and chargers. I shoved my phone in my pocket and ran out to the small kitchen in our flat.
"Gotta run, Arthur's already here! I'll see you later, bye mum, love you!" I didn't even look back to see what she had to say and just grabbed my key and ran outside. Arthur was waiting in his car, but hadn't even turned it off yet.
"Finally!" Arthur started pulling out of our lot. "I don't think we can make it for coffee today, Merlin." He used one hand to talk and the other to steer.
"No!" I pleaded. "I need my coffee and we only have P.E. right in the morning... What if we just skip?"
Arthur looked between me and the road as I begged. After a minute of hemming and hawing he scrunched up his nose and threw his head back. "Fine, but only if you promise no more skipping this month!"
I nodded quickly and he made a U-Turn, and his hand reached to turn up the volume and the bass on the radio. I could feel it deep in my chest and I nodded my head along.
I saw him singing along and smiled. I loved this stupid boy.
There was lots of traffic, everyone rushing to school and work. We leisurely drove, taking the wrong turn on purpose and driving around when we could've gone straight through. The sun was rising and it smelt like rain and Earth. Wildflowers bloomed where the road has yet to touch. We drove in peace before Arthur finally turned onto a main road and to the coffee shop.
He ordered for me, getting what we got nearly every morning; Black with a sugar for me, and two milks and sugars for him. Along with whatever syrup he fancied that morning.
The line moved quickly, we grabbed our drinks and headed back to the car. He drove with purpose now, taking occasional sips whilst heading to an old warehouse so we could park and talk. As he parked I checked my phone. Two new messages from Lance.
Lance 08:37 where are you? are you sick or skipping?
Lance 08:42 i'm going to say that you're skipping because then i still get paid to be here
I laughed and put my phone on the dashboard.
"What flavor in your coffee today?" I asked. He smiled, like he was waiting for me to ask.
"Why don't you try and guess?" He wiggled his eyebrows.
I played dumb, and grabbed his cup. He snatched it back and leaned in close to me. "That's not what I meant." His hands moved slowly, very precise. He was getting much better.
Before I could say anything he closed the gap between us and kissed me. I could feel him trying to suppress a smile against my lips and I reached my hands into his hair. I tugged slightly so he'd open his mouth. He did and I immediately tasted caramel. I let the kiss go on longer though, and waited until he tried to go further to pull away and verify my guess.
"Caramel?" I asked, knowing I was right.
"Correct, as always," He smiled. "I'm beginning to think you're cheating at this game. Can you actually hear when I order our drinks?"
I laughed and shook my head. Obviously I couldn't hear, but truth was I looked at the receipt everyday. I could always taste it, but I needed to be sure I was right.
