As Emem woke up the next morning, her window stood open and there was a letter on her bedside table.
She shot up, that probably meant that he had been here. She already had a hard time falling asleep the day before, she was worried about Maran. But the police had said, everything was perfectly normal there, and that they weren't going to bother the poor man twice.
And apparently, William had somehow made it into her room, left a letter and disappeared again, without her even noticing. Emem sighed heavily, she really hoped Maran was doing fine after the call yesterday.
The girl carefully opened the letter, and already saw blood on the paper. As she read it, again and again, the word that Maran had put down just slowly started to make sense. And the words underneath theirs, clearly written by someone else, didn't work their way up to realisation.
The last few words were definitely written by William, Emem couldn't think of anyone else that would cut Maran because they said something he dislikes.
Without thinking twice, the girl stood up and put on clothes. Maran had written that she could read Cecile's letter too, so she was going to do that.
Emem took the bus and arrived at the station just about ten minutes later. She rushed inside and demanded to see her friends parents.
As she finally got to see Cecile and Castim, she didn't even say 'Hello'. She immediately demanded to get handed the letter.
Quickly reading through the blood-stained paper, Emem wondered how a person could be so cruel, as to do something like that to her best friend.
She again ignored the last part added by William, stood up and with the words:"I'm going to break his fucking nose!", left to get the third letter.
It wasn't too hard to get a hold of the piece of paper, Emem just handed the officer the other two letters and asked if she could read the last one.
As she did, she noticed that there was something odd about it; Maran didn't write like that. Her friend always wrote freely, with nice long sentences and a nice structure.
She sat over the letter, thinking about why that could be, for a long time. In the meantime, two police cars went out. One team paid a visit to William's flat, the other one went to investigate at Freddy's.
As the first team came back, all of the officers that had went to Freddy's looked tired and disturbed. Apparently Maran had been right with their theory.
Emem asked to talk to Castim once more. She slammed the letter down in front of him and said:"You're a writer. What's wrong with this?"
The man laughed at her. "I thought you're a knowitall. You tell me", he answered hatefully.
"This is not a joke, Castim!", Emem snapped at him,"This is a life and death situation so read this fucking letter and tell me what's wrong with it!"
Castim rolled his eyes but did as Emem asked. It was silent for a few minutes, then he said:"This is a perfectly normal letter, the grammar is fine, and the words are thought through."
"Yes, but that is not how Maran writes. And you should know that, if you weren't so damn self-centred!", Emem yelled.
As Castim read through the letter a second time, he seemed to notice something.
With a dumb grin on his face, he said:"Seems like Jasmina is an idiot after all. It's not nice to start two paragraphs that follow each other with the same letter."
Emem snatched the letter back and left the room. Walking back into the other room, she pulled out her phone and wrote out the first letter of every paragraph. At first that seemed to lead into nothing, because "H A I W I L L I A M A F T O N" wasn't a word.
But as the girl read through it again and again, she noticed, that if she'd ignore the first three letters, she was left with "William Afton".
A sad grin slid onto her face. "Maran you're an idiot", she whispered through tears.
Maran was probably the only person to ever think of a hidden message, that only the person who hated them the most could solve. Emem told an officer about her discovery.
"William Afton is dead", the officer carefully said.
Emem nodded and replied:"That's why Maran thought it was a prank. We found out as much by just looking up the murders at Freddy's."
The woman looked at Emem for a few moments, then the phone rang. As she answered it, the girl could watch the officers expression change from bored, to concern, to disbelieve and then anger and shock.
As soon as the officer hung up, she said to Emem:"You're coming with me. I'm so so sorry."
"What do you mean?", Emem asked. But the woman just shook her head, took the girl by the hand and lead her to a police car.
The woman didn't say anything anymore, so Emem tried to call Maran again. She held on to every bit of hope, that someone had reached Maran before William made his promise come true.
As they pulled up in front of a big apartment complex, Emem was confused at the Police tape there. The house looked big and it seemed to be hard to afford an apartment there.
The woman led Emem into a flat that was in the basement, and Emem felt as if she needed to throw up. There was Maran.
But at the same time it wasn't them. The kid had cuts and scratches and bruises all over, their eyes were opened wide with shock. And in there chest, there was a big hole, revealing the heart to be missing.
Emem broke down crying, as the last two sentence William had written onto each letter finally reached her understanding:
Once you're getting this, Maran is dead. I've killed them.
