I'm forced to release Lilith's hand as Al helps me out of the bed. I lean on him for support as Dr. Andrews leads me out the door and into a service elevator at the end of the hall. Instead of going up to the labs like I thought we were he hits the down arrow and we start or decent to, I don't know where. "Where are we going doc?" I ask.
"Don't worry boy you'll know soon enough," Dr. Andrews starts without looking at me. I'm no longer leaning on Al but he stays close in case I fall. The doctors right though I'm starting to feel my legs give out. Earlier it was come and go now I'm worried they won't come back this time.
"We're here," Al says as I feel the elevator stop.
"Alright, now will someone please tell me where I'm the world we are?" I ask finally losing feeling in my legs entirely. I fall forward and Al catches me. I exhale as it his arms hoping my dead weight didn't break anything, but Al is tough he just grunts. Outside the elevator is a wheelchair waiting for me. I lower myself into it and Al pushes me fatter siren the hall.
"We're in a place that will change the date of the world as we know it Ray, and you are a part of that," Al says as we reach the next door.
"Well then let's make history guys," I say with more confidence than I truly feel.
"I like how you think Ray and I agree let's make history," Dr. Andrews says.
"Now someone explain this procedure to me please?" I ask.
"This is the proto human project, you've heard on the news about the super humans, right?" Al asks.
"Yeah I have, but what's that got to do with me and this proto human project?" I ask.
This time Dr. Andrews speaks up. "We plan to copy show of these abilities and implant them into you so you become a proto human." I look at the doctor and smile. "What are you smiling about kid?" Dr. Andrews asks.
"You're giving me exactly what I want," I say.
"Which is what?" Dr. Andrews asks looking confused.
"The ability to do some good for once," I say calmly looking the doctor in the eye. Andrews opens the door for us and I'm helped up into a steel container.
"Now I will warn, you this is going to hurt a lot. Probably more than that bullet wound and the following surgery to get it removed," Andrews says but I barely hear him my mind is focused on the goal. My goal protecting Lilith at all costs.
"Let's do it," I say calmly. The procedure begins and I black out.
