"you look happy."
"i'm always happy, tsuuki!"
"too happy."
yamaguchi's smile changes to a frown. looking up at his best friend, the two walked from the boys' locker room to the volleyball gym. the shorter of the pair had had an almost permanent smile the entire day up until now, and tsukishima was getting annoyed by the blinding white teeth.
"did you do anything interesting over the weekend, tsuuki?" yamaguchi tries to change the subject, his smile reappearing.
"mm, not really. my mother got me a dinosaur documentary to watch, though," the blond says. yamaguchi could swear he heard a bit of pleasantness in his friend's voice.
"was it good?" yamaguchi asks, a lopsided smile appearing on his face. tsukishima nods, patting yamaguchi's shoulder. the olive-haired boy blinks before nodding back.
tsukishima could already hear voices from inside the gym when he opened the door, and tossed his towel and water bottle on the floor. "come on, yamaguchi. let's warm up." said boy copies his friend before jogging to join his friend at the end of the court for a warm up.

yamaguchi personally had a really good weekend. a really, really good one, in fact.
that friday into saturday morning, terushima had come round yamaguchi's house to pick him up for an apology ice cream. the two rode for the majority in silence, making small talk a bit about how boring the party was and how the punch wasn't even spiked.
reaching an early opening cafe for early risers, they both got off of terushima's bicycle and hobbled inside. the owners, a middle aged couple with a friend, knew terushima as a regular despite it being in karasuno. getting the two their corresponding ice cream, the pair went outside to have their treat.
"you really didn't need to do this, teru," yamaguchi murmurs, twirling his coffee-flavored ice cream around his spoon before putting it in his mouth. terushima responds with a crooked smile, mint chocolate chip ice cream all over his lips. the other boy chuckles at the sight, his eyes sneaking a glance at terushima's lips before remaking eye contact.
"i would've felt guilty if i didn't. we always come by on fridays," the bottle blond says with a small laugh. yamaguchi replies with a smile, the two continuing to eat in silence.
the olive-haired boy broke the silence once more. "why do you bike around in karasuno when you can easily bike in your own town?"
terushima looks up, slightly surprised by the question but he thought about it. "well, the route is quieter. our high school is reaaaally big, and there's always kids out at night, doing uh, not so good stuff." yamaguchi laughs at his friend's attempt to censor his sentence.
"but yeah. we found that route in our first year at johzenji, and well, when you started coming around, we weren't very surprised after learning you were from karasuno, cause, well we're in it," the bottle blond shifts gears to try and finish his ice cream quicker.
"and besides, i prefer this route even more now because i get to see you!" the boy in yellow tilts his head side to side while he talks, licking his ice cream cone. yamaguchi nods, holding back a chuckle at the end of his information dump. he almost done with his own treat.
"why was kageyama at the party, though?" terushima looks up before furrowing his eyebrows, deep in thought before realization dawns on his face. yamaguchi couldn't help but marvel at the amount of different emotions terushima's face could show.
