I felt disgusted. I did it and I wasn't happy with the choice. I was far from happy. Why did it have to come to this?
I looked out the window, trying to ignore the screaming behind me. I sighed, nothing seemed to ignore this feeling. I reached for my Airpods case and slid my AirPods out. I quickly put them in, trying to ignore the tantrum.
I rotated my head to the left and saw that the person occupying the middle seat was snoring. As soon as he sat down, he passed out. The person to his left was busy tapping away on her Mac. She was in a suit so I'm assuming this is a business trip. I looked at the people in the next row. It looked like a family. The little girl was sitting in the middle, watching something on the tv screen. The parents looked so happy.
I sighed again. For once in my life, I wanted to be happy. I thought I was, but then I met Faith. That's when I finally understood what it means to be happy, she gave me a purpose in life. I had things to look forward to. Things to work for. And now, I just threw away the best thing that has ever happened to me. And for what? For money.
God. I fucked up. Bad. How could I be so shallow and selfish? I thought I had changed. Clearly I did not. Maybe me leaving is good. Faith deserves someone better than me. Someone that isn't afraid to stand up to their mom and defend their girl. God, I missed Faith.
"Excuse me," I heard someone say. I looked over and saw the woman in the suit. She was staring at me with annoyance in her eyes. I took out one of my AirPods. "You have been groaning all flight. Are you alright?"
"Sorry." I apologized. "I'll be fine."
"You don't look like it. What happened?" She asked with concern laced in her voice. She shut her Mac down and was giving me her undivided attention. I sighed. Maybe talking it out will make me feel better about my decision.
"I made a horrible choice and now I am having to live with the consequences." I vaguely explained. She chuckled, making the man in between us stir. She widened her eyes, waiting for him to fall back asleep.
"Let me guess, you didn't choose the girl." She stated. My mouth dropped open.
"Is it that obvious?" I groaned. Running a hand through my hair, I slumped even more in my seat.
"Just go get her." She encouraged. I shook my head.
"That's the thing. I had to make a choice and in that moment, I felt as if I would die if my mom cut me off. I thought I needed money to survive. So I chose to fly home and work for my mom instead of continuing my degree and being with the girl I love." I told her. She gave me a sympathetic smile.
"Sounds a lot like my husband." She laughed. "But he chose his career instead of me. I was pregnant our Junior year of college and he wanted me to drop out of school to take care of the baby. He didn't want to help because he was going to be drafted into the NFL. We lost the baby and he blamed me. So we broke up. I didn't see him until years later when I had to save his ass from going to jail."
"Woah. That happened to you?" I asked. She nodded, smiling. None of the tragedy seemed to have affected her.
"We're happily married now with three kids. My husband lived his life as a quarterback and I got to become a badass lawyer." She said flipping her hair over her shoulder. It was my turn to laugh.
"So, even though he made the wrong choice in that moment, you guys found your way back." I stated. She nodded.
"So, yes, you messed up. But, you can still fix it. Just don't wait until you do something stupid that needs her saving. I swear Blake is the biggest idiot I have ever met, but I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world." She replied, making me realize who her husband was.
