Idol: Jeon Jungkook
2021 is just four more hours away. I was at a pretty festive New Year's Eve party. Yet, I was aching for the slightest excuse to take myself home. Don wouldn't allow that anyway. It was a family tradition to host a party to bring in the new year. Last year was my older sister Mallory's turn. Next year will be my turn. However, my brother Don was known for his parties. He was your stereotypical frat boy. In my opinion, more like an overgrown man-child. A few weeks ago, Don took advantage of my drunkness and tricked me into attending his party. Knowing loud parties isn't my scene. Being the good little sister that I am, I showed up.
I was in the kitchen with Mallory. We were talking and catching up with each other. Updating each other on the latest gossip.
"Do you know that mama still wonders when you are going to find a boyfriend?"
"I've told mom several times that I do not need to settle down to be 'fulfilled' in life."
My mother has this fantasy that her daughters will turn out just like her. Married at 22, first kid before 25, and working at home. Neither Mallory nor I plan on living up to her expectations.
"She thinks you are a lesbian." I almost choked on my drink. I looked at my sister with wide eyes.
"When did she say this?!"
"This summer at the annual cookout. When you brought Yasmine over. Mom thought she was making lovey eyes at you."
"She needs to stop watching those soap operas. They are starting to get to her head." I sipped on the sprite in my cup. If I was in the mood to party, I would have poured myself a little bit of alcohol. But I'm my own designated driver. So that's not an option.
"Mom is also waiting for you and Chris to announce the pregnancy." I teased. Chris was Mallory's husband. Unknown to my mother's knowledge Mallory nor Chris were fans of children.
"It's going to break her heart. I can't let her know I tied my tubes." She sighed out loud. "She probably thinks I'm trying to end the bloodline."
I couldn't help but laugh at my sister's exaggeration.
"Twenty-eight and no kids." I mocked my mother's high voice. "Are you trying to end our family tree?"
We laughed together. But we both stopped laughing when we saw Don make his way over to us.
"There goes my two lovely sisters. Showing love to my big sis." He grabbed Mallory into one arm.
"Can't forget my feisty little sister." Don pulled me into the other arm. I was fighting Don off. I didn't even notice that there were other people in front of us.
