The next morning Emily awoke to an empty bed but saw a small note on her dressing table. Slowly getting up out of her bed she moved over to the note and quickly noticed it was Tommy's slightly scruffy handwriting. Gone to the betting shop, see you later on. TS. Was all the note said. Emily sighed as she placed the note down on the counter and started to get dressed for the day at the clinic.
Once she was dressed, she made her way downstairs and checked the clock. Sighing, she quickly grabbed her coat and nursing bag and made her way out of her door not having time to grab anything to eat. Just as she was locking up her house she heard someone calling her name. Turning round she came face to face with John Shelby.
"Running late?" John asked cheekily as he held out his arm to his friend.
"Just a tad John. But I'll be on time to the clinic." Emily smiled back causing him to smirk in response.
"Our Tommy didn't come home last night." John stated with his smirk still in place as he looked at the small blonde on his arm. "Any idea where he went?" John asked already knowing the answer.
"Nothing happened John alright." She answered as she blushed a little at what her friend was insinuating. "I'll come over Poll's later and see you and the kids after I've finished work." Emily said with a genuine smile and bid goodbye to John as they reached the clinic where she worked.
Walking through the doors she checked the clock to see that she had just made it on time but was already regretting not eating anything as she looked at the bundle of files sitting on her desk just waiting for their owners to walk into the clinic.
Sighing, she hung up her coat and set her bag down just as the front bell rang indicating that her first patient had arrived. This was going to be a long day Emily thought to herself as she plastered on a fake smile and gestured for her first patient of the day to take a seat in her office.
(Time skip)
As Emily predicted, it had been a very long and tiring day and she ended up staying later then usual to try and get through the amount of people that needed seeing as well as filling out the paper work.
As her last patient left, Emily sighed a tired sigh and went to lock the front door so she could finish up and get home forgetting the unspoken promise she had made John that morning. Just as she sat down at her desk, a rapid banging on the front door caused her to let out an irritated groan as she stood back up onto her sore feet and make her way to the door to see who could possibly need medical attention at this time. To her surprise, as soon as she opened the door, Polly Grey and Ada Shelby barged past her into the clinic. "Close the door quickly Emily." Polly said hurriedly as she pulled Ada into Emily's office before searching the clinic to make sure no one else was there.
"What on earths going on?" Emily asked dumbfounded with how Polly and Ada was reacting. Seeing as she wasn't going to get an answer out of Polly she turned to Ada who just adverted her gaze to the floor. "There's no one else here Poll, for Christ sake, it's just me." Emily exclaimed tiredly as she rubbed a hand over her face to try and fight off of the impending exhaustion and hunger.
"I need you to confirm a pregnancy." Was all Polly said causing Emily to look between Polly and Ada confusion clear on her face.
"Polly, Are you?" Emily asked very confused about the situation she had found herself in.
"No not me!" Polly exclaimed causing Ada to let out a small giggle at Emily's blatant confusion.
Soon enough Emily's eyes found their way to a guilty looking Ada and everything seemed to finally click in Emily's tired mind. "Oh Ada." Emily sighed feeling sorry for the poor Shelby girl. "This way." Emily muttered as she gestured towards her office and Polly stood outside waiting for the examination to finish.
It didn't take long for Emily to figure out whether or not Ada was pregnant. "You can get dressed now Ada." Was all Emily said as she washed her hands and cleaned her tools before putting them away and leaving Ada to get dressed.
"Wait! Am I or not?" Ada asked Emily but received only silence as Emily left the room to inform the elder of the Shelby's of the news.
"Well?" Polly asked looking at Emily expectantly as she left the room she previously occupied with Ada.
"Yeah." Emily sighed out, "Polly, if the boys find out they'll kill the poor bloke." Emily whispered to Polly causing Polly to shake her head at her niece.
"Come on Ada! Lets go home." Polly said causing Ada to come out of her hiding place and face her aunt and family friend.
"I'll walk with you two." Emily said softly as they walked out of the clinic and following the two Shelby's.
"I'm not getting rid of it Aunt Pol." Ada refused as they started to walk down the street.
"Just come home and we'll talk about it." Polly tried to reason with Ada with her hand on her bicep guiding her down the road towards Watery Lane with Emily walking the other side of Ada.
"You get off me or I'll scream it, I swear." Ada cried almost in hysterics at the news she had just received.
"All right, you want to do this on the street, let's do it." Polly seethed at her naïve niece. "Who's is it?" Polly asked causing Emily to look around them to make sure no one would over hear this convocation.
"If I tell you, you'll tell them and they'll cut him to pieces." Ada said as she started to calm herself down.
"Not if he marries you, they won't" Polly tried to reason with Ada but it was no use.
"Will he marry you Ada?" Emily asked cautiously as she tired to not cause a scene in the middle of the street with Ada.
Ada blew out some smoke before looking at Emily with tearful eyes. "I don't know where he is." Ada confessed looking to the nurse who she called friend for help.
"Jesus Christ, Ada!" Polly exclaimed causing Ada to try to defend the father of her unborn child.
"He's gone away but he said he'll come back." Ada tried to reason but her aunt wasn't going to back down and neither was Emily.
"They always say they'll come back Ada and they never bloody do." Emily explained as Polly nodded agreeing with the young woman.
"He's not like that." Ada started before breaking down into hysterics again. "He's a good man. He promised." Ada cried as Polly brought her into her arms. "He will come back Aunt Pol, I know he will."
"Let's get her home Polly before people start to ease drop." Emily said quietly to Polly who silently agreed and started to walk Ada to the Shelby's house.
"I'll pop round tomorrow Pol." Emily said softly to the older woman as she led Ada into the Shelby house hold.
"Don't breath a word of this to Tommy." Polly said as she came to stand in front of Emily. "I'll deal with him."
"Okay." Emily sighed. "But if he gets out of hand Pol, you come get me." Emily warned before bidding the elder Shelby goodnight and making her way home after a long and tedious day.
