Each piece is an empty shell before each battle. Each has no consciousness and no memory of the past and present. It is only when God granted them purpose on the battlefield did each awaken. God dictated the purpose of each piece when they were made, and their purpose was ingrained into every shard of their being.
As for the Knight, his purpose was to follow the chivalric code.
1. Thou shalt protect those who cannot protect themselves.
2. Thou shalt fear God and maintain his church
3. Thou shalt love the country in which thou was born
4. Thou shalt make war without mercy
5. Thou shalt obey those placed in authority
6. Thou shalt fear Good and maintain his church
7. Thou shalt respect and honour women
And thus, the battle began. The Kings would command his troops based on the wills of their Gods, and each piece moved instinctually as if they were nudged by the heavens.
White would move first.
"G1 to F3" The White King sent the White Knight, whose loyalty to the throne was second to none, out on to the front lines. Somehow, his aura was different from the rest. He, mounted on his white destrier horse, leaped over his troops and came down with a thud, shaking the board. The destrier stood up on his hind legs and roared.
The White Knights were the pride and joy of the White Royals, so by the 2nd turn they had sent out their second Knight. The Black Royals, however, had sent out a single pawn to face an army.

See, the God of the White Royals emphasized "thou shalt protect those who cannot protect themselves" or in other words, the Knights should protect the pawns. Contrastly, the God of the Black Royals emphasized "Thou shalt fear God and maintain his church" or in other words, the Knights should be reserved.
It was the 9th turn, the White Knight had advanced the furthest among the White Royals, much farther than all of their pawns. The Black Knights were still hidden within a wall of pawns, and even their Queen.

The White Knight looked to his left and he wavered, jor just a moment, seeing that the Black Queen had made such an advance. Then he looked down at the Black Knights. "Your Queen may be the only admiral one in your Kingdom. You on the other hand are a coward for hiding behind your Kingdom's peasants (pawns)."
The Black Knight pointed his sword at the White Knight. "And you're a fool. Watch and learn."
