“Raina,” the all too familiar voice says, eighteen, and just as brazen as he’s always been.

“Alex,” she retorts quickly, “what do you want? Gonna try to copy my English homework and get me in trouble, again?”

“Wow, Mr. Gaskarth, talking during an assembly? Would you and your girlfriend would like to share what is so important that you cannot be quiet?” a teacher hisses behind them in the packed auditorium.

Alex whips around and Raina already prepares herself for disaster, “I… Oh, look,” the brunette boy smirks deviously, his words spewing without a forethought will probably be concluded without much of an afterthought, either, “Mrs. North, my incredibly hot Health teacher. I personally don’t think it’s anyone’s business but Raina, here, was just wondering if we could get some condoms from you; she’d be too embarrassed to go purchase them herself and then everyone would know the school’s biggest nerd is gonna give me the lay of my life this weekend.”

The teacher looks relatively calm for the statement she delivers to the mismatched duo, “I certainly hope the two of you hadn’t had anything planned for Saturday because you’ve just earned yourselves a detention, and a stay in the guidance office. Go, now.”

Alex quite literally has to drag a stunned Raina out of the auditorium, and almost feels remorseful for including her in on his prank; she never gets into trouble, in fact, she’s hardly ever seen around the school. She tries to remain as far away from the spotlight as possible; she just wants to finish high school and get on with her life. Admittedly, something about her bashfulness and witty intelligence appealed to him in every single way possible; to put it bluntly, he finds her downright sexy and if given the chance, he’d bed her in a heartbeat.

When they plop down in the guidance suite, the counselor gives them a wary look, “I heard the two of you were planning to sleep together...?”

“Raina, you have literally not said a single word to me since Wednesday,” Alex whispers to his companion next to him. Her thick dark hair creates a screen between the two of them and she continues her charade.

“Rain—”

“You wanna know why I haven’t talked to you since Wednesday, Alex?! Let me fill you in just a little bit. You steal my work and copy it, you treat me like shit and generally act like I don’t exist. In sixth grade, you asked me to the dance and ditched me; in eighth, I admitted that I had a crush on you, you forwarded the texts to our entire school; in ninth grade, you stood by and watched while all your friends filled my locker with grains of sand. You have done nothing but make my life hell since we were ten and eleven years old! I want nothing to do with you; I was surprised you even talked to me at the assembly, let alone alluded to the fact that we were sleeping together and never will be.”

“In sixth grade, I ditched you because I was about to have an anxiety attack; that dance was right after Thomas’ death; in eighth grade, that forwarding was an accident; by ninth grade you’d hated me so badly and I didn’t want it know how much of a crush of I’ve always had on you so I did nothing. As far as copying your homework… I’m sorry but you’re fucking brilliant; not all of us can be as smart as you, y’know.”

And for the second time in a week, he’s managed to stun her to silence.

“Oh, come on,” he says in a low, shy purr, “You never even suspected why I always messed with, or flirted with you as a kid?”

“You acting like a douche was not exactly flirting.”

“On the contrary, when you’re ten, that is the extent of all the flirting you know how to do.”

“Are you talking, Mr. Gaskarth and Ms.—”

“Sorry, we’ll stop,” Alex replies, quickly cutting off the moderating teacher, desperate to hear her response. Does she return his feelings?

“You’re an asshole, and an imbecile, and a jerk, and prideful, and arrogant, and rude, and I hate you,” she mutters before pulling the stupid boy who’s ruined everything against her, to catch his lips in a sweet, long overdue kiss.

“I didn’t know we said ‘I hate you’ with kisses,” he whispers teasingly against her lips.

“Oh, shut up,” she murmurs, deepening the vaguely fervent kiss.

“Oh, so the rumors are true, you two are together,” the teacher mutters, without looking up from the dimly lit screen of her case-enclosed Kindle fire, “Figures, a nerd and the school’s self-proclaimed bad boy have a better love life together as a mismatched couple than I do with anyone, ever.”
