Episode Six, Part 5:
Do This For Me
Let me be lighter. I'm tired
of being a fighter, I think.
As Wynn exited the Sovereigns' Quarters, he tucked Sol's radio under his shirt, not wanting anyone else to see that he had possession of it. He made his way down to the hidden alcove by the edge of the fence, paranoid that someone would follow him or interrupt what he had gone there to do.
He paced around for a couple of minutes, figuring out what he was going to say to his dad, or anyone else if they realised his plans. Once he was finally sure that no one was coming to find him, Wynn pulled out the radio, sitting down on the log where Sol would always be.
"Dad?" He sounded afraid. "Dad, are you there? If you can hear me, please answer."
He waited a moment, not hearing anything.
"Dad? It's-"
"Wynn? You can't just call out of the blue!" His father immediately began to scold him. "If you had called even a minute earlier-"
"Okay, I'm sorry!" The young boy defended himself, not feeling strong enough to withstand a lecture from him. "But I needed to ask," he began, "did you even try? Did you even consider that it could be me?"
"What are you talking about?" Kane sounded slightly calmer now, but he was evidently confused.
"What we discussed last night?" Wynn replied. "Or as soon as you hung up, did you just forget about it completely? Forget what I said about becoming the Heir-"
"I have been theorizing it with Rhea, actually. She's in the middle of deciding." There was a spark of relief in Wynn's heart, easing some of the weight in his chest, but it wasn't enough.
"Yet you're still going to war," he said. "That's not part of the deal, Dad."
"We have made no announcement or advances on our attack. You're the only person who knows about it-"
"Not anymore," Wynn mumbled.
"What are you talking about? Did you tell them? I swear if you said anything-"
"No!" Wynn cut him off. "But we just received a message from one of your hostages to warn us that you guys are coming. As far as they're concerned, you want to kill the Sovereigns."
Kane sighed against the radio. "Of course we're preparing to attack. We have to incase Rhea doesn't agree to your offer, but that doesn't mean the deal's off. Look, I made the guidelines clear: if we take you, we leave Basilsik alone. For Quill," he said. "It's what Elara would have wanted."
Wynn closed his eyes, leaning firmly against the radio as he let out a sharp breath. It was sinking in what his plan meant: that he would leave Quill and Elara behind... It suddenly became difficult to breathe, and he had to fight the pounding in his head to be able to focus on what his father was saying to him. After all, doing this, becoming the Heir - it was the only way to make sure that everyone was safe.
"Look," Kane said. "I am so close to convincing Rhea that you could be our Heir. You'll know as soon as I know. Don't call me again. I'll call you." And with that, his father switched his radio off, cutting off the signal to the one Wynn had in his hands.
The silence left him scared out of his mind, threatening to pull him into an unknown darkness. He knew had to find a way to shut his mind off for a few hours, otherwise, Aeryn was right: he would burnout.
