Episode One, Part 6:
B r o t h e r
Dreea ripped her sword out of the last member of Targo that was left alive, blood dripping by her feet. She glanced around, making sure both Kodiak and Sol were still alive as she began to count all the bodies, double-checking each one to make sure they were all dead.
Kodiak retreated over to Sol, tucking his gun back into his pants, taking a moment to catch his breath.
"Did they kill any of ours?" He asked, nervous for the answer as he scanned the fences of Basilisk.
"Yeah," Sol exhaled, wiping her hair out of her face. "Four, but they weren't shooters. They all had close-range weapons. Remind me when all this is over to review our training."
Kodiak nodded. "Losing only four to almost forty of them, though. That's something..." Despite their losses, there was a trace of a smile on his face.
Sol matched him, nudging softly against his arm, relieved in their victory. "Guess it just proves Targo aren't a match for us, after all."
"They're all dead," Dreea announced nonchalantly as she approached the two of them. "Kodiak, you're clear now to go and meet Wynn and Elara, but we should probably worry about Quill. And Ares. He doesn't know what's happened."
The boy sighed, momentarily having forgotten what had gone wrong. "Quill... We need to get our radios back on. Send a message to Ares and Fenn-"
"They're already on. The guards turned the tower back on a few minutes ago. A message was sent out to both Ares and Fenn's radio, but they can't receive it. We tried Wynn's as well, but he must be on Riders' side of the river."
Kodiak breathed out sharply, dropping his head as he tried to figure out what to do. He couldn't let Elara down. He couldn't.
"Hey!"
The Sovereigns all looked towards the gates where someone was running from, hurrying over to them. It was Bas.
"They took Quill!?" He asked, a horrified look on his face.
"Yeah," Sol told him regretfully. "Ares doesn't know, either, and he's already on his way to the dams with Fenn. We can't get a hold of them."
The boy's jaw clenched, anxiety raging inside of him. "Well, you do have a plan, right? You can get him back? Because you know what will happen if you do nothing-"
"Bas!" Dreea cut him off, shooting a sympathetic look his way. "We'll figure something out."
Bas folded his arms, looking around at the three of them, waiting to hear one of their suggestions, but they were all quiet, and he knew why. They didn't know what to do.
Taking matters into his own hands, Bas walked directly through their huddle and headed to the nearest body on the ground. He pulled the bloody knife out of the person's hand, inspecting it for a couple of seconds, moving over to the next body and doing the same.
"Bas, what are you doing?" Sol asked, unable to figure out his intentions.
"I'm going after him," he declared, a hostility in his voice. He looked down at the body at his feet, a moment of consideration before he dropped what weapons he had already collected in his hands, swapping it for the sabre-clip blade he had just discovered. He seemed pleased with his find, wiping the blood on his shirt before carefully securing it in the holster on his belt.
"Wait, you can't go out there. It's dangerous enough as it is, and we can't risk someone else getting caught up in everything," Sol tried to reason with him, knowing that it would only make matters worse if so many of Wynn's family were outside of Basilisk. History had proven that things never turned out well.
"Quill is my family," Bas spat, marching over to the Sovereigns. He realised he was coming across too aggressive, noticing the warning on Dreea's face, and he tried to compose himself.
"I'm sorry," he continued. "But they're all my family, and right now, most of them are unprotected out there. I have to get to him. I have to bring him back. He's family."
Sol sighed, caving at his words. She knew just how important family was to the Bunker Clan. With only seven of them remaining together, the desperation to protect what they had left was stronger than ever.
"Okay," she gave him permission. "But let's talk about this. Together. All four of us."
"No," Bas shook his head. "I know what I'm gonna do."
"And what's that?" Kodiak joined the conversation, approaching with Dreea.
"I'll join the march. I'll approach them from the side and weave my way in. There's so many of them, and two different clans might I add, that they won't even realise I'm not one of them."
"No. Absolutely not," Dreea refused. "You'll get the both of you killed. Not to mention that if Kane sees you, the whole plan could be over."
"Then what else do you suggest!?" Bas exclaimed, begging for another option.
Dreea dropped her head. She couldn't give him an answer. Not at that moment, anyway.
"Look, I've been out there enough times with you," he reasoned with Dreea, reminding her of all the training she had given them. "I know how to get back here, I know how to fight. Okay? Worse comes to worst, I get Quill free and they kill me. This plan is about Elara. She'll never get over it if they take her brother."
Dreea sighed, taking control of the situation. "I'm sorry," she began. "It's too dangerous. We're not doing that."
"Well," Bas clicked his teeth. "You see, that's a shame because I'm not asking for your permission."
"Bas!" Sol argued, but it was already too late. He had stepped away as he spoke and by the time he had finished, he had managed to turn around and flee from the Sovereigns, running past the bodies in the direction that Targo had left with Quill.
Dreea attempted to move past Sol and chase after him, but she grabbed onto her arm, stopping her from leaving as well.
"There's no point fighting him," the Nobel said. "He's made up his mind. Besides, it would only draw attention to you both. He's trained for something like this. You're just going to have to have a little faith in him."
Dreea huffed, biting back her anger to stop it from spilling out on her friends. "Fine, but if he dies out there, I'm not going to be the one to carry his body back to camp."
