I walk downstairs at eleven, already dressed in skinny jeans and a red flannel shirt, along with black vans. My damp hair is loose. The jeans and shoes were Alice's idea. She didn't approve of the shirt, saying that I was a lady and should dress like one. But I was firm on it. Better than some flowery girly shirt. Comfort is all that matters.
Carlisle is talking to Rosalie yet again in the living room in hushed tones, but remembering yesterday, I choose to go the opposite direction, towards the kitchen. I grab a pop tart out of the pantry, studying the spotless kitchen, and take a bite, humming as I jog upstairs to grab the leather satchel from my shopping trip. Stuffing my mouth with the last couple bites of my pop tart, I put my sketch pad and charcoals in my bag, along with another pop tart and a water bottle that I had grabbed from the kitchen. I do up the bag and sling it over my shoulder.
Being here for a week and a half already, I still haven't even gotten to check out the beautiful woods around the house. Well today was the day. I grab my phone and earbuds, along with a plain Burt's Bees lip chap, adding them to the bag. Slinging it onto my shoulder, I walk down the stairs, sticking my earbuds in and walking out the door. Before I can close the door behind me however, I notice a very attractive dark haired guy with bronze skin talking angrily to Edward in front of the house, me just out of sight from their field of view
"I want to see her. She'll be safe with me." The dark haired boy growls in a deep voice.
"With Victoria running around? I hardly think so Jacob." Edward scoffs.
"She's not safe against a blood sucker if she's with other blood suckers." Jacob says angrily. I look at him in confusion. What'd he just call Edward?
"And how do you know that?" Edward says in a lazy manner.
"Because I have no idea why the hell Bella would trust you, let alone the rest of your vampire family, but she needs to stay with me. We're stronger than your whole family combined." Edward smirks before replying.
"That's debatable." Jacob lets out a small snarl.
"How's the new girl taking it? Living with a bunch of leeches like you guys?" I stay just out of sight, in shock. Are they drunk or something? Suddenly Carlisle walks out from the garage, Esme and Rosalie following. Carlisle will straighten them out, I think, relieved.
"Please Jacob," Carlisle says in a calm voice. "Our guest isn't aware of us, and I would like to keep it that way." What the hell?
"For how long?" Jacob sneers. "She will find out by the end of the month." I take a deep breath, stumbling into sight by accident, filled with confusion, doubt, and most of all horror.
"Carlisle." Esme says in a panicked voice, being the first one to notice me. Everyone's heads snap up to look at me. I shake my head in disbelief, before turning and running back through the house, dropping my bag on the way, out the back door, and into the woods. Ignoring everyone's already distant calls, I keep running, not looking back, until there's woods on all sides and I have no idea about where the hell I am.Blood suckers, leeches, vampires. I cringe at the last word as the truth sinks in while I walk. They're no fantasy. They're not some made up monster in fiction books. They're real. Real as my parents death. Real as the words that came out of that attractive Jacob boy's mouth. It all sets in. Edward and Emmett's constant hunting, the untouched food, the non sleeping family, the secretive attitudes. The ice cold skin, I remember with a shiver. All of it adds up. But how is it possible? I groan and rub my temples. I can't go back. I can't. Who knows what they would do. Now that I know, they might want their secret hidden. For good. I pace in frustration. Suddenly I feel something wet drip onto my nose. I rub at it, then look at the sky, getting a raindrop in my eye this time. Oh great.
Within movements I'm soaked to the bone, both my hair and clothes plastered to me like a second skin. The freezing rain keeps pounding down, and I can't see worth crap. I spin around, trying to find any sort of shelter, but the sheets of rain continue to mostly blind me. I shiver, my teeth chattering, and step under a tree, waiting for the rain to pass.
After what could've been an hour or two, the rain lets up. I'm leaning against the tree, curled up, my knees pressed to my chest and my arms wrapped around them. I rock back and forth, the movement producing no warm whatsoever. I hear a twig snap in the distance, making me jump as the silence is broken to the sound of someone walking in my direction. Suddenly, Jacob appears. I watch him wearily as he approaches.
"Hey." He says weakly. I watch him, too cold and scared to say anything. He shuffles on his feet. "Please come back and let them explain." He says reluctantly, as if he was told to say this.
"I trusted them." The voice that came out of my mouth was thick and I try to ignore the tired dizziness in my head. Jacob nods.
"And you still should. But first, you should trust me. Come back with me. They won't hurt you. You've known them your whole life." I watch him carefully as he takes another step forward. I stand up, my cold, stiff legs almost giving out. I walk up to him slowly, weakly. I look him directly in the eye.
"No." I make sure he got the message with my cold tone before turning around. Before I can react his arms are wrapped around me and he throws me over his shoulder as if I only weigh two pounds. I let out a yell of frustration and kick, yell, swear at him to put me down. But he calmly ignores me, not seeming to even feel my kicks. I get in a good one where I know it hurts and he grunts in pain, holding the backs of my legs to restrict me from kicking anymore.
"Let me go you prick!" I yell and try to escape desperately, full of fear.
"You're okay Eve, relax." He groans and holds me tighter. Finally I'm too tired to even speak, and he switches to carrying me bridal style. I don't react, only to lay my head on his shoulder, suddenly exhausted from my fight. As he's holding me, I slowly feel my body start to warm up, start to strengthen. My eyelids flutter closed.
I open my eyes slowly, feeling the soft duvet cover from my bed with my hands. I realize I'm in a pair of sweats and a warm sweater that must be Alice's. I see Carlisle sitting a safe distance, at the end of my bed, but still I recoil at the sight of him. I see him cringe and feel guilt eat at my stomach, along with hunger. I check the clock. Nine PM?? I sneak a glance back at Carlisle, who is watching me carefully.
"How are you feeling?" He inquires. I shrug and look down.
"Hungry." I say quietly. He smiles slightly and hands me a sandwich on a plate that was sitting beside him. I take a careful bite. Some Tuscan type chicken flavour which is delicious. I eat it hungrily, watching Carlisle defensively the whole time.
"Eve," he starts but I interrupt.
"Why didn't you tell me." He sighs at my hard expression.
"For this exact reason." He states, looking at me. I suddenly think of something.
"Did my parents know?" I say doubtfully. Carlisle's guilty expression gives the answer away before he replies with a short
"Yes." I nod, thinking about this.
"I'm sorry I ran away." I state. Carlisle nods.
"It's understandable." I suddenly feel awkward.
"So do you.. Eat people?" I say quietly, looking at him with widened eyes at the thought of him doing such a thing. He shakes his head.
"We survive off of animal blood. A better and less harmful supplement." I nod again, pondering it.
"Hunting." I state, remembering Edward's choice of words. Carlisle nods. I look at him.
"Is Jacob a vampire?" I ask, remembering his immense strength. He shakes his head slowly.
"Jacob is something else." He says, his tone suggesting he doesn't want to say what.
"Please.. tell me." I beg. "No more secrets." He sighs before replying.
"Jacob is a werewolf, Eve." I sit there in shock. As Carlisle watches my movements carefully I say weakly,
"Do unicorns and leprechauns exist too?" Carlisle chuckles and shakes his head.
"Not that I know of." I smile slightly at his reply and cover a sudden yawn with one hand. Carlisle smiles.
"Get some sleep." He says and I nod before snuggling under the covers. He pulls them tighter around me and kisses my forehead before turning off my light and walking out almost silently, pulling the door closed behind him. I sigh in exhaustion before I willingly close my eyes. That night I dreamt of the woods, but only in a peaceful way. No nightmares for once.
