I don't know how they did it, but the Guardians convinced me to come along. As we hopped out of the sleigh, I looked around, memories coming back. North ushered us to the Great Hall, and we followed suit. I was surprised at the amount of spring in my step. The floor froze under my feet, and when the yetis groaned, I swept my staff over it to clean it up. The surprise on Phil's face is weird. Then I remember I didn't use to care. Tooth fluttered around nervously, her gaze flitting between me and North.
"So, we all know the reason we are in Great Hall, no?" The other Guardians nodded, but I shook my head. Bunny must have seen the confusion on my face, because he smirked and pointed at North. "We are here to welcome back our youngest Guardian!" I raised my eyebrow, still very much left in the dark. Bunny rolled his eyes.
"He's talking about you, mate." I just stood there, mouth agape in shock. I pointed to myself with an unbelieving expression, as if to say, "What, me?" Sandy nodded kindly. I took a step back. My eyes narrowed. I was suspicious. Bunny was the first to notice.
"We missed you, mate. A thousand years without the Guardian of Fun makes life a little boring. Plus, who knows what Pitch did to you?"At the mention of Pitch, my eyes widened, and I tensed. My breathing and heartbeat quickened too. Bunny put a hand on my shoulder, and I flinched like he was about to hit me. "Jack. JACK!" I was snapped out of it, and then I collapsed onto my knees, sobbing into myself. Bunny knelt next to me. "What's wrong, mate?" I looked into those emerald eyes with more caution than fun in my own. How was I supposed to tell him? I couldn't talk! Then I saw Sandy in the corner of my eye. I made a tiny ice sculpture of Pitch, then myself. I made Mini-Pitch hit Mini-Me, and then I showed him starving me, him giving me nightmares, then us escaping.
Bunny had tears in his own eyes now. "Jack... w-w-how?!" I looked at him, trying to make my confusion obvious. "How did you survive?" I smiled sadly, not sure how I was supposed to tell him. Sandy understood. He told the Guardians about everything. I went outside, not wanting to see the events that took place in Sandy's Dreamsand world. I made a few mini ice sculptures, but nothing could relieve me of the ache inside me.
A black shadow momentarily blocked out the moon. I jumped at the sudden loss of light. The shadow crashed into the snow in front of me, and I jumped back. Hiding behind a barren tree, I peeped at the creature, flooded by curiosity. A boy got off it and looked straight at my hiding place.
"I know you're there, come out from behind the tree! We're not gonna hurt you. We promise." The creature sniffed the air around me, and I held my breath. It snagged my hood and dragged me out of my not-so-great hiding place. The boy stood before me. "Toothless, down." The creature, which I could now see was a Dragon, let go of my hood, looking at me with big green eyes that I couldn't help but think were cute. I smiled at the Dragon, letting curiosity take me over. It licked me without warning, and I screwed up my nose in disgust. The boy laughed. I don't know why, but I liked his laugh. It was... cute. I looked him up and down, not wanting to appear judgemental. His forest green shirt and faded brown pants didn't look to be nearly enough to hold out the cold, as he was holding himself and shivering. His brown fur overcoat didn't do much to help either. Looking down, I was surprised to see that while his right leg was normal, his left leg wasn't, gone from just below the knee."What are you doing out here? We saw you, and thought you could use a little help." I shook my head to say, "I'm fine." I looked at the boy. He was paler than me, and unless it was a trick of the light, his lips were tinged blue. His breath came in ragged gasps, and the dragon was pressed against him to give him extra warmth. My face hardened. I beckoned the boy and his Dragon to come with me. He got on the Dragon, and I looked on in wonder and amazement as his prosthetic leg click into the left stirrup of the Dragon's saddle. A red tail fin flexed to shake off the ice building up on it, and they took off excitedly. The boy looked down at me. "You coming?" His voice was nasally and weirdly high for a boy his age (I didn't know what it was, mind you). I nodded, pushing off my bad leg (shit!) to get into the air. He stared in fascination, but I just shrugged. Beckoning them again, I led them into Santoff Clausen undetected, until Phil stopped us.
"And where do you think you're going with a total stranger in such a hurry?" I depicted the entire scene in ice for him, and he let us through reluctantly. I looked back at the boy. He was getting weaker. I growled at the Dragon, its ears perking up immediately. He rushed with the boot on him, and he panicked.
"Woah! Toothless, slow down!" Toothless ignored him, landing in the Great Hall with a thud as the Guardians rushed to get out of the way. Toothless looked around with such innocent curiosity it made me smile. The boy groaned on his back, and we all froze. Bunny walked over to the boy and his Dragon cautiously, and picked the boy up. He shivered into Bunny's arms, becoming less tense as he warmed up. I decided to stay away from him until he was fully conscious. Bunny, again the first to react, asked the boy gently but firmly,
"What are you doing here?""My name is Hiccup Haddock the Third. Guardians of Childhood, I need your help. The children are in danger. And he," he pointed to the moon, "told me to come to you."
