Dreams suck.
Not just ANY dreams, demigod dreams.
After falling into bed at around elevenish, I fell asleep almost instantly. I thought after the stressful day I had just had, I thought I would sleep hard enough to avoid any dreams.
I was wrong.
I first found myself back at my dad's house.
My family was very wealthy, owning almost one hundred acres of land for farming, and having a four-story mansion. I never bragged about my house or my wealth. In fact, I almost never talked about my family. Anyway, in the dream, I was standing in our aviary, which is a little area in the middle of the house that is filled with flowers and glass and a little stone bench in the middle. The aviary plants never died, which was a miracle, considering we almost always forgot to water them, which is strange since I'm a child of Demeter. I was sitting on the bench, looking at my favorite flowers, marigolds, when suddenly, I heard a voice. I panicked, instantly reminded of the dreams I had when Gaea was waking. But this voice was different, it sounded nicer, calmer, motherly, not at all like Gaea's enchanting voice, quiet, but somehow fear-inducing.
I look around, trying to find the source of the voice. I then get up from the bench and start to walk over to a beautiful rose bush that I was ninety-nine percent sure wasn't there before.
When I reach the bush, I look at one particular flower, it seems to be the origin of the voice. Slowly, the rose changes shape until it is a woman.
She is breathtakingly beautiful, with long dirty blond hair, a green silk dress, and golden laurels wrapped around her head. I instantly recognized her, she was my mother, Demeter.
"Mother? What are you doing here?"
Demeter gestured for me to follow her. I did. We walked through bushes and trees, hopping from rock to rock, and even wading through small streams. I was confused, this was no longer my house, but an unfamiliar terrain.
Demeter then stuck out her hand to stop me from walking off a cliff. My heart stopped, we had stopped on a cliff overlooking one of the most beautiful landscapes I had ever seen. There were lush green plants growing down in the valley, along with a big city. It wasn't like New York, it was more of an ancient Rome city. The roofs were made out of red stucco and the walls were just white concrete. There was also a small river weaving in and out of the houses and down to the sea, which was so close I could smell the salt.
"Where are we?"
My mother kept her eyes on the ocean.
"Africa."
Gee, thanks mom, that clears it up.
I understood the gods weren't always direct with answers, but it still annoyed me to no end. I took a deep breath and stared at my mom.
"Why are you visiting me? Is there something wrong?"
My mom finally made eye contact with me and sighed.
"Your camp is doing well, yes?"
"Um, sure, yeah, it's not getting attacked by monsters every day."
"Katie, I have foreseen many problems in your future, and not all of them will be as easy as killing monsters."
I stared at her for a moment before asking:
"What problems?"
"Katie, even if I knew exactly what you'd be facing, you know I couldn't tell you. But here's some advice; keep that Hermes kid close to you. He seems to be tightly intertwined with your future."
