Fleur POV.

You smooth your pleated skirt, looking at your reflection in your window. Today's the day! The first day of your last year of high school. This year, you'll have all the right people by your side, you'll prepare for college, you'll live your best life, and laugh constantly.

Yeah. This year is going to be good.

Smirking to yourself, you take a glance at Erica to joke, "Hey, what's white and black and red all over? I'll give you a hint - it isn't a sunburnt penguin."

Erica, who is applying a voluminous amount of lip gloss, mutters sarcastically, "I could never guess."

"It's us!" You exclaim, ignoring her saucy attitude and twirling around in your uniform.

Gandy Academy's uniform was pretty basic. Red, black, and white plaid skirts. Knee socks, with wing tipped shoes. A button up and a red jacket to tie it all together. You don't look fantastic in the color red, but you doubt that Gandy would ever change their school colors. To finish getting ready, you grab a little, metal pin off of your desk, attaching it to the front of your jacket.

It's your house's coat of arms. Since the school was designed after English boarding schools, each house had an identifying coat of arms, so teachers could tell which students were in which houses. Each house was named after one of the original teachers at the school. There's Trejo, Anne (fun fact: Anne was the only female teacher allowed at the school when it was founded - and she also happened to be the founder's wife), Johnson, and Polo. Students are expected to wear their coat of arms on their uniforms during school hours, and would be disciplined if they weren't wearing it.

Trejo's coat of arms has a silver lion, holding a black flag in its paws. Anne's has two gold foxes holding up a green and blue shield. Johnson has a red bear carrying a silver cross. Polo has a purple badger with an olive branch in its mouth. When you started at Gandy Academy as a Freshman, you were put into Polo house. The house assignments were done completely randomly, but of course, there are house rivalries and reputations.

You've always been proud to be in Polo. It was the same house that your mother and your sister, Lavender, had been assigned to many years ago. You will never forget how excited your mother was when you were put into Polo.

Erica interrupts your thoughts, saying, "You know, your uniform joke isn't funny after you've told it a hundred times."

Smiling, you respond, "My uniform joke will always be funny! Are you ready to go yet? We're supposed to meet the other girls down at breakfast."

"I guess this is as good as it's going to get." Erica sighs heavily, still inspecting herself in the mirror with a pouty expression.

"You're adorable and you know it." You say, "Now, hurry up! I'm starving."

There's been a big ordeal of catching up with all your friends and acquaintances since you arrived at Gandy. As you and Erica head out of your dorm and across the school grounds, you can't help but feel like a dynamic duo. The both of you wave to old friends that lay out on the grass, soaking up the sun before being stuck inside for the rest of the day.

You and Erica jog up the steps of the Brick House (which contains the dining hall, main offices, and the nurses office). There's a lot of younger students milling about in the entrance hall, getting help with their schedules from patient teachers, who offer directions or instructions. Immediately off the entrance hall on the right is the dining hall, which is already an eruption of noise and movement.

As you walk into the large, echoey room, your eyes scan the dining hall, spotting many friendly faces. Several people yell hello to you and Erica.

"Fleur! Erica!"
