The play had began. The extras entered the stage and made the great audience vibrate and laugh. While, Madame Giry brought Miss Daaé to the theatre's aisle. The woman was apprehensive, for there was nothing she could do, and her mind was spinning by how her life had changed so intensely in so little time.
— Go, the curtains are about to open. — The old Giry warned, and Christine hurried to go to Carlotta's side at the XVII century-decorated stage.
— Serafimo, your disguise is perfect. — A knocking is listened from the Coutess, played by La Carlotta. — Why, who can this be?
— Gentle wife, admit your loving husband. — Piangi moved into the stage.
My love, I am called to England on affairs of State,
And must leave you with your new maid. — He takes a slightly naughty look at the girl-disguised Pageboy, and talks with the audience. — Though I'd gladly take the maid with me!— The old fool is leaving! — The Countess replied.
The crowd cheered and the actors breathed in peace by the Phantom's absence. Everything was going just perfect, and the situation was under control. Wasn't it?
— Serafimo! Away with this pretense! — The Pageboy teared his disguise apart, revealing himself to the Countess and the public.
You cannot speak, but kiss me in my husband's absence! — And Christine, dressed as a XVIII century boy, comes closer to Carlotta, pretending to kiss her, laughing with the lady.
Poor fool, he makes me laugh!
Ha ha ha ha ha
Time I tried to get a better, better half!— Poor fool, he doesn't know!
Ha ha ha ha ha — Her chaperones and lackeys laugh with her.
If he knew the truth he'd never ever go!— Did I not instruct that Box Five was to be kept empty? — The masked ghost's voice echoed and was heard from all over the Opera House.
All the astonished eyes curiously turned to the highest of the theatre boxes, and there was the Vicomte of Chagny, who watched the play from there, since it was the closest place to the stage, and the only empty place to seat. And, as the people there noticed, the Phantom's favourite seat.
— He's there! — Meg pointed to the ceiling, next to the hall's chandelier. — The Phantom of the Opera!
— It's him... — Christine whispered louder than her thought, frightened by the subtle appearance.
— Your part is silent, little toad! — La Carlotta scolded her, as she heard the insolent girl's voice.
— A toad, madame? — The Phantom's voice was once again heard. — Perhaps it is you who are the toad.
Not a single soul understood what exactly was happening in that moment, so when the Opera Ghost seemed to go away, Carlotta walked to the backstage and recomposed herself. As the woman with a noble rococo dress returned, the maestro played the previous scene once more.
— Serafimo! Away with this pretense!
You cannot speak, but kiss me in my... Croak! — Carlotta got blushed and trembling as the audience laughed at her. "A toad... what sort of curse is this?!"
Poor fool, he makes me laugh!... Croak! Croak! She couldn't understand what was happening, and she was scared. As she noisily exited the luminous stage, the curtains fatally had to close, and the managers went down the stage to try to fix the uncomfortable situation.
— Eh... gentlemen! — He began. — We apologize. The, uhm, performance... will continue in ten minutes time, when the role of the Countess... — Monsieur Firmin pulled Christine from the back of the curtains. — will be played by Miss Daaé!
