Justin pulled over almost immediately after I had ripped off his hood and we were both left in shock, breathing heavily. ‘Fuck!’ He yelled suddenly, I flinched at the sudden volume of his voice. He turned and glared at me.
‘I don’t understand.’ I mumbled, a little stunned. I mean, he had been eating at The Marionette two weeks ago, why the Hell is he street racing?
‘What do you mean you don’t understand?’ He snarled.
I shot him a dirty look. ‘I mean it’s hardly like you need to be doing this, is it? You were eating with your father in the most expensive restaurant the other day!’ I snapped at him.
‘What I do is none of your damn business, Emerald.’ He hissed through gritted teeth.
I let out an annoyed sigh and rolled my lips into my mouth. ‘Here’s your money,’ I tossed him the envelope and saw it land on his lap out of my peripheral vision. I couldn’t believe that the same guy who had me tongue tied was Phantom. Nothing seemed to register in my mind as I swallowed heavily.
I finally knew who Phantom was – and he’s a complete asshole – but what was I going to do now? I wanted to know why he was doing this but I had a feeling that he wouldn’t tell me. ‘Thanks,’ he grunted and opened it up, he counted it quickly before slipping it into the glove compartment in front of me. ‘Look, you can’t tell anyone.’ He said softly.
I had guessed as much. ‘Who are you? I mean, I recognize you from yesterday but like, who are you?’
‘I’m Justin Bieber, my father is Jeremy Bieber.’ He answered. I made a small “o” with my mouth as I realised just exactly who I was sat beside. Jeremy Bieber was the founder of Bieber Software Inc. and while I didn’t know much about the company, I knew that Justin had enough money so that his great grandkid wouldn’t have to work a day in its life, so it brought around the question. Why was he racing? ‘Are you going to say anything, Emerald, or are you just going to sit there?’
‘Emmy,’ I corrected gently. My mother was the only person who called me Emerald.
‘Emmy,’ he repeated, as if tasting my name. ‘I mean it, you can’t tell anyone it’s me.’
‘I won’t,’ I promised.
I was in a bit of a daze, it was surreal that I was sat beside Phantom, finally. ‘Are you okay?’ Justin asked hesitantly.
‘Yea, I could really go for a burger though.’ I muttered, checking behind us one more time to see if there were any police. The coast was clear and I felt the car spark to life beneath me.
‘McDonald’s okay with you?’ Justin asked and I nodded.
‘So you’re not going to tell me why you race?’ I pressed him for answers.
‘Didn’t your mother ever tell you that curiosity killed the cat?’ He glanced over at me with a wry smile on his face and I grinned at him.
‘But satisfaction brought him back.’ I smirked at him and he clocked his tongue, trying not to smile.
‘Smartass,’ he grumbled before pulling into the Drive Thru in McDonalds. We both ordered and before I could reach into my pocket for some spare change, Justin had handed over more than enough for both of us.
‘I could have paid you know,’ I told him, popping a fry into my mouth as we sat in the parking lot.
‘I know, but I’m a gentleman.’
I took the time while we were eating to truly examine this specimen in front of me. His dishevelled hair was a honey brown and thick, my hands would get lost in it as I tugged it. His profile looked like an Ancient Greek statue with a strong nose a jaw that could cut through glass, the muscles in his jaw flexed as he ate and I swallowed loudly, chewing on the straw of my drink absently. I could see some of the definition of his arms as he ate. He was even more attractive than I remembered and I hadn’t thought that that was possible.
