‘I made Phantom laugh, you know.’ Haley smiled, leaning on the opposite side of the bar. It was a Saturday night and I had taken the night off work to spend some time with Haley. Ever since I had spent Christmas with Justin and his family last month, I had barely seen her. Justin and I were always together and I missed her.
But she was going on and on and on about Phantom. Patrick hadn’t let her start off the races but instead, Haley gave him his money.
I clenched my jaw. I was being a little silly, I knew that Haley didn’t know that Justin was Phantom and if she did she wouldn’t dream of flirting with him. However, everything was still one big secret so I had to sit here and listen to her tell me about how she was making my boyfriend laugh.
‘Did you now?’ I tried to keep my voice light but it didn’t work.
‘What’s wrong with you?’ Haley frowned at me.
‘Nothing,’ I grunted tensely. She shot me a strange look before some people came into the bar, Haley went and served them while I tried to calm myself down. I knew that I couldn’t really be angry at Haley because she was so oblivious to the circumstance and while I understood why Justin didn’t want me to tell her, the whole situation was so frustrating.
Justin kept laughing it off but it really irked me that Haley was constantly talking about it.
‘Are you going to tell me what’s making you so miserable?’ Haley asked, bringing over a beer and I rolled my eyes.
‘Nothing,’ I stressed. ‘Can we talk about something else?’
‘Like what?’
‘Like Callum, have you spoken since Christmas?’
‘Yea, we’ve been texting a little. I think I’m going to give Phantom my phone number.’
I choked on my beer and glared at her. ‘What?’
‘Well, he slipped you back that crappy handkerchief, so maybe he’ll text me.’
Now I was offended. The blue handkerchief had become a symbol of mine and Justin’s relationship and she had called it crappy but again I couldn’t mention why she had just royally pissed me the fuck off.
‘Cool.’ I drank more of my beer.
‘Seriously, Emmy, what’s wrong?’
‘Nothing!’
‘That’s such bullshit, I’m supposed to be your best friend. Have I done something? Are you angry about Phantom because that’s really childish?’
‘No, Jesus Haley, excuse me for not wanting to talk about you every fucking second.’ I snarled, my temper flaring at being called immature.
‘That’s rich,’ she snapped back. ‘All I hear is Justin this, Justin that, my poor mom. I mean like get over it.’ Haley stopped short and I stilled.
