The Start Of Something Beautiful

Zoe's POV

"Okay, Chummy, just calm down," I called into the phone, trying to be heard over Louise's sobs.

"I can't calm down, Zo! She's my daughter!" Louise wailed. She had been crying this for 10 minutes now, and she was showing no sign of calming down.

"Tell me what happened."

"Okay," she sniffed. "I ran a bath for Darcy, and while I was waiting for it, I went outside to get the mail. Then, I came back inside to turn off the tap, because I was worried that the bath would overflow, and I left the door open. That's when Darcy ran awayyyy!" she finished her story in a wail.

"Have you called the police?" I asked.

"Of course! I'm just so worried..." Louise sobbed.

"Then... I'll go look for her!" I decided.

"Really, Chummy? You would do that for me?"

"Of course. That's what chummies are for," I told her, then said a quick goodbye and hung up.

"Zo? Where are you going?" Alfie asked, coming out of the kitchen with two steaming cups of tea.

"Darcy's gone missing. I'm going out to look for her," I told him, as I opened the door.

"I'll come too," he said as he put the tea on the table, then went outside and closed the door behind him.

---

"Can you see her?" I asked Alfie, five hours after we left. He was driving us around, as we tried to find Darcy.

He sighed. "No, Zo, I can't. Maybe we should give up. The police will surely find her."

"No! I promised Louise."

He sighed, but didn't turn the car around. I loved him for that.

After another hour of driving and Alfie trying to convince me to give it up, we drove past a park.

"Zoe, I'm just saying that it's pointless. It's getting dark-"

"Stop the car!" I cried, my heart beating faster.

Alfie looked startled. "What?"

"Just stop the car!"

He pulled over. I opened my door and got out. "Zoe, what are you-" he didn't get to finish, because I had slammed the door shut by then. I hurried across the road, silently cursing to myself for wearing heels. I quickly entered the park through the gate.

Alfie jogged over to walk beside me. "Zoe, where are you going?"

I pointed. "Look!"

Sitting alone on a swing was a young girl with curly blonde hair. I had found Darcy, and before the sun had set, too.

"Darcy!" Alfie and I cried at the same time. As I struggled to walk on the sand in my heels, Alfie ran over and picked her up, spinning her around in circles.

"Your mummy's been worried sick!" Alfie exclaimed, as he carried her over to me.

"I wanted to go to park," Darcy informed him, looking up at him with innocent eyes.

"We need to take you home now, Darcy," I told her, as I struggled to walk back to the path.

"Okay," she mumbled sleepily, wrapping her tiny arms around Alfie's neck.

As we walked back to his car, Alfie turned to me. "Hey, Zo?"

"Yeah?"

"I know that you like me in that way," he said.

"Huh, how?" I asked, completely confused.

"Louise told me," he answered. Of course.

"Oh, Alfie..." I trailed off, looking at the ground in embarrassment.

"Well, I love you too."

"Really?" I asked, looking up.

"Yes," he replied. "I always have, and I always will."

He buckled Darcy into his car then got into his car seat. I sat in mine too.

"I have as well," I said, smiling at him.

This was the start of a very beautiful thing.
