Demi's pov

"Do you want a snack?" I asked Joe as I turned my kitchen light on and led him to the island as he took a seat at the barstool. "I always get really hungry after a good swim," I told him.

"Yeah, that sounds good," he said with a smile.

"Great, What sounds good?" I asked opening up my refrigerator. "I've got fruit, yogurt, cookie cough. Oh, I've also got some snacks in my pantry," I said running to it.

"Wow, I don't think I've ever seen you with so many groceries in your house," he teased.

"I know!" I said excitedly. "I've been buying a lot since I've been truly recovering and it's crazy I feel like a real adult. I even buy my own now instead of having Phil buy them. I don't mean to brag buuuut, I do have quite a few rewards points at Whole Foods if I do say so myself," I joked giving myself a hair flip as I pulled out a pack of Oreos. "These okay?" I asked.

"When are Oreos never okay?" He said with a laugh.

I chuckled and grabbed a cup and some milk out knowing he would want that with his Oreos.

"Where's your cup?" He asked me.

"Oh, didn't I tell you? I'm a twister now," I mentioned as I gently slid the cup of milk in front of him and took a seat beside him.

"Wow, you should feel ashamed, traitor," he joked spinning around on my rotating bar stool.

"I know, I know. I didn't intend to be," I said as I grabbed an Oreo out of the pack. "I'm vegan now though and they just don't taste the same with almond milk. See for yourself," I explained.

"I'm not convinced," he said as he dunked his Oreo into the almond milk I poured him.

We both laughed at our playful teasing for a moment before it got silent in the room and Joe had a look in his eye like he was dying to ask me a question. I knew it was coming so I braced myself.

"Demi, can I ask you something?" Joe said.

Wow I was good.

"Of course," I replied.

"Why did you ask me to come over?" He asked bluntly.

I avoided eye contact with him as I thought more and more about what my answer should be. I debated about whether or not I should be honest with him or just play coy. Then I realized my relationship with Joe has always been genuine and I didn't want that to change now.

"To be honest with you I was super lonely. I really craved human connection from someone who wasn't just like freeloading off of me or trying to party all the time. I just wanted to be around somebody who knows there's way more to life than sex, drugs, and rock & roll," I said honestly in the bravest way possible.

"That makes total sense and you know I'm always here for you," he told me.

I nodded my head understandingly.
