Nineteen Years Ago
Eleven years old Sa'ad Bashir was trembling in fear and panic from under the bed where he was hidden. He witnessed the murder of his parents live from his hiding place, if not for the fact that one of the men had told him not to make a sound and hide, he would have been howling at the time.
Hot tears dropped from his face as he watched the light leave his mother's eyes and she went still. Even as an eleven year old boy, he knew just how much death hurts. Especially when it was your parents death happening right before your eyes.
"Where is the kid?" An unknown voice had asked. "We can't do things halfway."
"I don't know where he is." The voice that told him to hide lied.
"Baffah, we have to look for the boy."
"No, we have to leave." The voice he had recognised as Baffah said. "We have done enough as it is, we need to flee before anyone finds us here."
As Sa'ad laid underneath the bed, weeping profusely and silently. He had etched the name Baffah into his memory, he also had clutched on to the name tag that Baffah had unknowingly dropped as he pushed him underneath the bed. He didn't know just yet what to do with it, but he knew better than to let the only thing that could help him.
He heard shuffles around the room and then it was complete silent, indicating that his parents murderers had left. He crawled out from underneath the bed to where his mother's lifeless body was lying on the ground.
"Mammy." He shook her but to no avail. He was weeping so helplessly as he moved to his father and did the same thing but nothing happened. He already had stepped into the pool of blood lying on the ground with his parents lifeless body, his hands and body now covered in the blood.
As he opened his palms, the name tag he had held on to lies there on his palm. It read Baffah Sadiq. The kind of fire he felt burning in his throat was unlike nothing he had felt before. Whoever this Baffah Sadiq was hadn't helped him, he should have let him died with his parents because at that moment, he had nothing to live for. He had no one in this world. The only people he knew were his parents and a few family friends here and there.
He wondered what his parents could have done for anyone for someone to want them dead so bad. As far as he knew, his parents were the best people so he didn't understand why anyone would want to hurt them. He was inexperienced and too young to understand anything that happened a few minutes ago.
The door to the bedroom pushed open and he saw Baffah Sadiq advancing towards him. Out of fear, Sa'ad rushed to his feet and started moving backwards until he hit the wall.
"I'm not going to hurt you." The strange man whispered, his eyes were bloodshot and he also looked terrified. if he hadn't been among those that killed his parents, Sa'ad would have seemed comfort in the man but at the moment, he didn't want him anywhere near him. "What is your name?" The man asked but he suddenly changed his mind. "You know what, don't tell me. I want you to run to the far end of the street, follow the back door to the gate in the back." He turned around, checking to see if anyone is coming. "There is a car waiting, they'll take you somewhere safe."
"No." Even as young as he was, Sa'ad was hot tempered and stubborn. "You killed my parents, you want to kill me too."
"They are coming back, go!" The man didn't bother explaining to him. "Now!!" When Sa'ad heard bangs coming from the parlour, he realised he had no choice but to follow what Baffah Sadiq has ordained him to do.
