The Next Day
Aria's PovI slip my feet into my flip-flops, getting ready to go to Hanna's. I grab Ezra's car keys off the counter and my purse off the table. Since Ezra doesn't have to go anywhere, he said I could use his car so Hanna doesn't have to pick me up.
"Bye Ezra." I say, turning to look at him on the couch. He smiles and waves at me. I open the door and step into the hallway, but get stopped by a basket sitting on the mat. It's quite large, and filled with baby things. I stare at it momentarily, wondering who it could possibly be from. The only people who know about the baby are my parents, my brother, and my friends. My heart takes a nervous leap. It could be from my parents.
I search the basket for a note, looking in between the blankets, diapers, and stuffed animals, which are all a gender-neutral yellow. Finally, I find a small card tucked against a three-pack of bottles. I open the note, scanning it for a name. The words are written in cursive lettering, however, there are two words that couldn't be more clear; Dianne Fitzgerald.
"Ezra?" I say, opening the front door again. He looks confused, probably wondering why I'm still here. His eyes stare at the basket in my hands.
"Where'd that come from?" He says as I sit down beside him.
I look down at my lap, then directly into his eyes "Your mom." He looks confused at first, but the confusion is quickly replaced with anger.
"You said you wouldn't tell my mom!" Disappointment and anger wash over his face at the same time. Now it's my turn to be confused.
"Ezra, I didn't! I thought you did!" I retort. He shakes his head, staring down at the overflowing basket.
"If I didn't tell her, and neither did you," He starts "Then who did?" Suddenly, it clicks; A.
"It was A." A shudder goes through me as I speak "It must've been. I mean, there's no other explanation." A look of realization washes over him.
"But..." He stutters "How?" It was that very question that I had been asking myself for so long. Eventually, I had to learn that maybe there was no explanation. I just shrug. We stay silent for a few moments, unsure of what to say next.
"Was there a note?" Ezra asks. I nod, digging through the basket again.
"Here." I say, handing it to him. He begins to read it, and with each word, his face contorts more and more.
"Aria you said it wasn't you who told her!" He says, suddenly looking up from the paper. I try to tell him that it wasn't me, but the words get caught in my throat.
"It wasn't!" I half plead. I grab the note out of his hands and begin to read it. I can barely believe what it says:
'Aria,
Thank you for emailing me about your news. As you can probably realize, I am somewhat less than pleased. Nonetheless, I have still decided to help support you all. I assume you and Ezra will need help wherever you can get it. A baby is a great deal of work, and I doubt you or Ezra are at all prepared. I am unimpressed by this, however, I do wish to see my grandchild on a regular basis. As you know, my son and I are not currently on speaking terms, so I think a nice talk is due sometime soon. This Wednesday I will come to Rosewood so we can all have a conversation. I should be there at around noon.
-Dianne Fitzgerald'I stare at the paper in disbelief. Wednesday. That's today. Noon. That's in 45 minutes.
"Shit." I say, clenching my teeth together. Ezra looks at me, probably still convinced that I told his mom.
"What?" He asks. I look at the clock again.
"Did you read the whole thing?" I ask quickly. He shakes his head. I double check the date on my phone.
