We were the last ones to pull up, and as I stepped out, I took in the war ruin around me. "You still good? You can turn back at any time, just say the words." Chris reminded.
"Not gonna happen." I replied, walking forwards and standing with the others, not missing the sigh he let out as I left. There was an injured bravo on the ground, and the team was carrying him away as Chris joined us.
"Listen up!" He ordered, getting everyone's attention, "In the BSAA, our job is to rid the world of Bioterrorism, and the only way we're gonna do that is by sticking together."
"Nobody's expendable," Piers spoke up.
"Exactly. Now each and every one of you may be ready to die for our cause, but it's my job to make sure we all get through this alive." Chris paused as Finn let out a quiet sniff and wiped at his eyes.
"Suck it up, Finn," Piers told him.
"Sorry, Sir." He nodded in response.
"No gets left behind, not on my watch. Understood?" Chris looked at the group, that erupted into a chorus of, "Yes, Sir!"
"Melissa, that includes you." He reminded, turning on me as I leant on the wall.
"Yeah, Chris. I know, stick by your side." I brushed him off, causing the group, minus Finn, to laugh.
"Finn, give us the update." Piers spoke up, and the rookie stepped forwards.
"The Guerillas Are using a new species of B.O.W, command is calling them J'avo. They are extremely intelligent, incredibly strong, and have the ability to mutate in response to physical trauma." Finn informed, and Chris nodded.
"Alright. You know the drill, we split into three teams. Move out!" Andy, Ben and Carl moves away, whilst the four of us stood for a moment. Chris turned on Finn, "you're the rookie, huh?" He asked.
"Yes, sir. Finn Macauley, sir."
"I know you're nervous, Finn. But the teams got your back, ok?" Chris promised, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"Yes, sir. I'll give this everything I've got!" Finn assured, and Chris's nodded, patting his shoulder, before walking away.
Finn turned to Piers and I, "is he always this awesome?" He asked. I burst out laughing and Piers just shook his head, staying silent as he walked away. "Did I do something wrong?" Finn looked at me, and I placed a friendly hand on his shoulder.
"Your inner fanboy is coming out, pal. Piers is...he can be easily annoyed." I explained.
"Oh, okay. I'll keep that in mind." He nodded in thanks.
"If he gives you too much trouble, let me know." I let go, turning to move away when Finn spoke again.
"I see how you and the Captain are similar, it's clear you both care." He stated.
"Thanks, Finn. Come on, let's get moving." I waved him over, and we climbed into one of the trucks, but I didn't miss the glare Piers shot our way.
Minutes later we were driving through street when gunshots were heard and Piers' voice came through comms, "Enemy Fire! Enemy fire! Alpha team, engage!" And then the truck ahead was on top of ours, and my head was slammed against the seat ahead. "Come in HQ! We're taking fire at the Two of Hearts! Engaging the enemy!" Chris' voice came next, and I forced the door open, rushing out and standing behind the nearby wall. The J'avo were everywhere, and my pistol was not cutting it.
"Alpha team, come in. Our units are spread too thin right now. I'm afraid we can't offer you any assistance." HQ informed.
"Copy That. We'll go in alone then." Chris replied, running over to me. "You ok?"
