Chapter 2: The first day

As I descended the stairs I heard a scattering of voices. Of course mom would neglect to mention that they're already here. Oh well I already decided in my head that they're probably weirdos. Who offers to help move someone in when they have nothing to gain, i mean my parents probably will pay them but i doubt they told these kids this already.

After I reached the bottom of the stairs I realized my only hope of evading mind numbing conversation would be to sneak out with Rusty. And that's exactly what I did.I grabbed Rusty and his leash and exited through the side door by the stairs.

Rusty seemed ecstatic to be outside, he gets a little stir crazy after being in cars for too long.

As Rusty and I began to walk I pulled out my phone and pulled up Link's familiar contact. I miss him so much right now it hurts to even think about how far apart we are.

"Hello, Emmie?" Link picked up the phone, "is everything alright, did you get there in one piece?" he joked.

"Hi Linky" I managed to squeak out, the sound of his voice over the phone made my throat tighten up and my heart ache. "I miss you so much."

"I know Big-E but it's only for one school year remember?" He assured me, Link had been planning to attend the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs to play D2 lacrosse ever since he found out I would be moving to Colorado. Originally he had planned to stay in South Dakota and I would venture off with him but once he found out I was moving he immediately started looking at scouting. He had dreamed of playing D1 but missed the Colorado D1 dates. Now that I'm here my big ambitions for college plans might have to shift too, especially if Link is coming all the way to Colorado just for me.

"I know I know, college can't come soon enough" I agreed. " And you're still coming down for homecoming right?"

"Of course Emmie I wouldn't miss the chance to see you," he assured me, making a grin come to my face.

Link and I continued to talk for hours, I complained about Grant, and mom and dad, and especially them trying to force friends on me, but mostly I just reminisced on how much I missed him.

Once I was certain the faux movers would be gone I reluctantly hung up on Link, wiped the remnant tears from my face, and marched Rusty and I back to the house. If you can't fake like where you moved to you'll never be popular.

The sound of my blaring Iphone was not one that I missed over the summer, but I was determined to be up bright and early for my last first day of school. To try to make it a little better I try to play music instead of the boring old apex or alarm sound. This morning the bass boosted melody of The Wrecks "Fuck Somebody" woke me up.

I had meticulously planned my outfit for school the night before, having watched enough Emma Chamberlain videos to copy her style close enough. Of course with my own flare. I like to dress a little edgy sometimes who can blame me, you only live once.

I rushed downstairs as soon as I was ready, my habit of almost always running out of time in the morning did not remain in South Dakota.

Normally I would drive Grant and myself to school, however we're still waiting for our other cars to be brought down, so my mom had to drive us, which is fine anyway because we had some paperwork to fill out.

Mom had signed Grant and I up for classes when they came down looking for houses over the summer, however Grant and I still needed to get our schedules and all that, so we have no time to spare.

We pulled up to our brand new high school, Littleton High.

"And look Emmie, Grant, it's those boys from yesterday" My mom said waving out the window, quite obnoxiously. I saw Grant give people out the window a nod as I hid my face. I did not want to be associated with not only Grant the drug dealer, but also the Karen obnoxiously waving out her window to nerdy high schoolers.

I rushed out the car as soon as my mom parked, leading the way to the central office after seeing a sign pointing me towards my right. I figured the sooner we get in there and get our schedules, the sooner my mom and Grant will leave me alone and stop embarrassing me.

After getting my schedule I was determined to leave Grant, my mom, and the Vice Principal in order to find my classes on my own without being looked at like the freaky new girl. As I started my way, taking lefts and rights, I began to realize I no longer knew where I was. And from the look of the equations and math symbols written on the boards of classrooms I was passing, I was not going in the right direction to go to Honors English 12.

As I weighed the pros and cons of asking someone for help, a petite girl with platinum blonde hair, and big almost bug-like blue eyes came up to me.

"Are you new here" she asked.

"I am, I just moved here from South Dakota, and I'm a little embarrassed to admit this but I'm totally lost" I admitted to her.

"Oh no worries, give your schedule here. My name's Angela, but please call me Angel, I'm trying to rebrand myself," she spoke in one breath, "Oh look at that I'm going to Hoffman too, she's absolutely horrible. Out of this whole school they give seniors the only mean english teacher, like what the heck!?" she continued.

"Oh god I don't think I'm ready for that.." I began before getting interrupted.

"What's your name then new girl?" Angel quickly spoke again.

"Oh my name is Emmaline, I go by Emmie though, not a rebranding, just what I've always gone by," I joked. However the rebranding comment seemed to go right over her head as she stared longingly at a group of boys passing.

"Who are they?" I asked, a sneaking suspicion she would enjoy that subject.

"Oh gosh, they're just just a bunch of nobodies," she stammered for the first time since meeting her, seeming lost for words.

"Are you sure they're just 'nobodies'?" I push her further.

"Well one of them is, well, I'm in love with him?" my new friend expressed.

"Oh which one? Is he your boyfriend?"

"Oh haha not yet, oh gosh, his name is Riker and he is absolutely stunning oh my gosh. I'll point him out to you at lunch, you'll sit with me right?" she asked, going again 100 miles a minute throwing everything at me.

"I mean of course I'll sit with you" I began feeling happy for once since moving to this town.

"Oh wait, promise you won't go after him though, if I point him out to you, I mean. He's my turf." she spoke suddenly seriously.

"Of course not, girl code," I replied as we ventured into what I guess is the Honors 12th English classroom.

Angel pulled me over to two seats over in the row closest to the window, not quite in the back of the class but also not in the front, muttering something about lighting just in case. In case of what, I don't know. I didn't have to wonder what made her choose these seats long because almost as soon as we sat ourselves, in walked a pack of three boys and 1 girl. One I noted being the "RIker" guy that Angel had been swooning over earlier, the girl had striking blonde hair and was holding the hand of a brown haired boy, and trailing in the back was a leather jacket glad guy with bright blonde hair.

Angel looked about ready to pass out and I thought her eyes would bulge out of her head as she hurriedly turned around and whispered to me that I wouldn't have to wait until lunch to meet her so-called "knight in shining armor" as he was right there. Of course she didn't forget to remind me about her dibs over him before she turned back around to stare before I could get a word in edgewise, not like I would anyway... I have Link.
