"Hey babe I brought you some flowers, I read online that roses are your favorite so here you go." Mason says as he walks into the room and sits next to me. I've been in a coma for, I dont even know, and I'd do anything to wake up and tell him it's ok.
"I know I said this yesterday but I really am sorry. I love you Brookie and I should have said that to you rather than blaming you for my problems." He continues and I'm pretty sure if I was awake I would start tearing up a little.
"Mum sends her love and Maddie said I've got to give you a big hug from her. Hurry up and wake up so I can give you that hug." I try my best to open my eyes but it's no use.
"You mean the world to me." He kisses my head before taking hold of my hand. "I guess nows as good of a time as any to tell you about my depression." He rambles and I want to tell him to stop, that if he doesn't want to open up he doesn't have to. I suppose it's easier talking to an unconscious person.
"It started about five years ago I think. I began to withdraw from things, I took my anger out on those closest to me and the only thing that actually interested me was dancing. That's when mum enrolled me, which should have cheered me up." He starts which I guess makes sense. He definitely took his anger out on me.
"I couldn't even tell you what brought it on, that just made it even more frustrating. I've got the perfect family, I get a world class education and I have great friends, what is there to be depressed about. Mum sent me to see loads of different doctors and all they did was put me on a range of meds. I was ready to end it all, I had all my pills lined up and I wanted to say goodbye. Then you came along. You turned my life around and Brooke I couldn't thank you enough, I really do love you so much." It sounds as if his voice is breaking but I couldn't be sure. It breaks my heart to know he's been suffering like that all alone. It goes quiet for a moment and I hear someone walking in, it's amazing how much your senses change when you're in a coma.
"Mr Morgan." I hear Mason stutter out. Oh god the poor kid is meeting my father for the first time.
"Brian is fine." Dad tells him which is a good sign. "You must be the infamous Mason." He chuckles.
"Yes." He responds and I swear I hear him swallow.
"How is she?" He asks, obviously referring to me.
"She's stable, the doctors are just waiting for her to wake up now. They put her into a coma so she can preserve energy." Mason explains as he squeezes my hand.
"When they called, I thought I was going to lose her. Thank you so much for being here Mason." He mutters and my heart flutters at his acceptance of my boyfriend, if he is still my boyfriend.
"If you don't mind me saying sir, when she wakes up obviously she's going to need a lot of support." Mason starts and I wonder where he's going with this. "I think comparing her to her mum is something she finds extremely difficult. She just needs to know that you care about her." Mason tells him and I can't believe he had the guts to say that to my dad.
"I never meant to upset her, I just wanted her to get the best from life." He mumbles.
"I don't think either of us meant to upset her." Mason whispers and his voice breaks my heart. It takes every ounce of energy I have but I manage to gently squeeze his hand.
"She moved. Brooke can you hear me?" He asks in excitement and jumps up from the chair.
"I'll get the nurse." Dad exclaims and I hear him leave the room. Don't get too excited guys I'm not sure I have the energy to wake up.
"I'm going to up her fluids and hopefully she'll be awake soon if she's moving. Just remember she can hear everything we say so try to be positive." The nurse instructs before checking my temperature then leaving.
"Come on Brooke, Alice is in need of a girl to gossip with about Chase. Plus class just isn't the same without you, the duet doesn't quite work with one person." He chuckles the last part.
"We miss you baby." Dad tells me as he kisses my forehead. "I'm so proud of you and I know mum would be too.
A little over an hour later and the room has been silent for a while so I presume they have both left. The nurse has been in to check on me but other than that its silence. I focus my energy and try to open my eyes. It takes a couple of minutes but I feel my head pounding as the light from the room creeps in. I blink a few times to adjust before opening my eyes properly. Once my mind focuses properly, I turn my head to see Mason fast asleep in the chair next to me and dad must have left.
After what feels like about an hour, he stretches and let's out a giant yawn.
"Have I ever told you how much of a cute sleeper you are?" I ask rhetorically to let him know I'm awake.
"Brooke..." His head snaps in my direction at lightning speed and a huge relief is lifted from him.
"Hello." I chuckle at the look on his face.
"Oh god I'm so happy to see you're awake." He starts as he takes hold of my hand. "Look babe I'm so sorry about the way I spoke to you then these last couple of weeks." He tries to apologise but I'm too tired.
"Not now Mason." I tell him as I squeeze his hand. "Can you get the nurse I want to go home." I instruct knowing full well I wont be allowed yet. The reality of what waking up means hits me and all I want to do is go back to sleep.
"Brooke you're awake that's great news. How are you feeling?" She asks as she writes on her clipboard.
"Surprisingly really well, when can I go home?" I lie hopefully.
"Not yet." She chuckles. "I'll let the doctor know you're awake and I think he'll want to have a talk with you. For now though, just keep resting and ring your buzzer if you need anything." She gestures to the button next to me.
"Thank you." I mutter quite disappointedly. She checks my temperature and my blood pressure before leaving.
"What happened?" I ask quietly and Mason just looks at me wordlessly for a moment before explaining.
"You weren't giving your body the energy it needed to function so it just shut down." Hey tells me and I can tell this is difficult for him. "I thought I'd lost you."
"I'm still here." I say before closing my eyes and falling back asleep.
