I'm finally out of the flat tire province. But not before it threw me a couple more curve balls.

First off, I had to buy a new pair of shades, as I crushed my old ones under my knee crawling into my tent last night. I was sure, though, to get a pair with the same colour and reflective style of lens as my previous pair, so as to maintain my established appearance, which no doubt is iconic to those following my travels by now.

The second setback was in the town of Lake Louise, which I thought could be exited by following along with the road I came in on. I toiled up a steep and winding hill for the better part of an hour before checking Google and realizing there was no exit this way. I had to go back to the entrance because it was the only way in or out. Riding back down was easy at least, even if I was too annoyed to enjoy it.

But after all this, I finally found the provincial border. And damn, was it ever made obvious soon after. I descended one kilometre after another to the sight of rock walls, creeks and vistas. I even spotted a black bear on my way down. It ran back among the trees at my approach, watching me rocket by from there. I would've loved a picture, but I also don't wanna get eaten.

Eventually the road evened out again and there I was at the very nadir of the world. I suppose it's only fair that if you wanna climb mountains, you start at the bottom.

There were times in Manitoba and Saskatchewan that I'd look ahead and shudder at the endless expanse of road before me. It seemed hopelessly far to my goal.

It's a similar feeling now. I only have one more province to cross, but it's so much to climb and I can't even find a place to camp. There's no vacancy in the town of Field. I might just have to find an empty patch of grass for my tent, like back at McClean. A field, if you will.

Goodbye, Banff. Blowin' this popsicle stand.
