bucky groaned with tiredness as he sat up in his bed. feeling around with his right arm, he hummed in question when he didn't locate your body beside his. glancing around, he figured you were out for coffee and decided to check his phone.
after a while, he heard the door to your shared apartment open and close, followed by your voice and...paws? he looked up again, staring at the door to your bedroom. he listened closer with eagerness; wondering when you would pop in to greet him.
the scratching of paws quickly died down and moments later you opened the door with a wide smile.
❝morning birthday boy,❞ biting your lip, you seated yourself beside him and quickly gave him a kiss. he smiled back, discarding his phone back on the nightstand on his side.
❝mornin', doll.❞
❝i got a surprise for you.❞ he could tell how excited you were just by the tone in your voice. he only responded with a hum and a smirk, watching you hand him a cup of coffee you got on your way back from wherever and quickly leaving again.
you returned with a larger box, carrying it with both arms. setting it gently down on the bed, you stepped back. ❝open it!❞
he chuckled lightly at you, placing his beverage down and doing as he was told. when he opened the lid, a small chocolate labradoodle puppy sprang up, immediately barking at bucky.
he gasped in surprise, watching the small dog jumping to get out. he picked it up, staring at it in awe. gazing up at you, you only smiled at kissed bucky once more. ❝happy birthday.❞
you stood up, leaving the room to fetch the toys you had bought the dog too. upon returning, your smile slowly died as you noticed bucky's shoulders bouncing, like he was crying.
❝hey...❞ you spoke softly, slowly approaching the bed. ❝you alright?❞
❝no one's ever done anything like this for me,❞ he replied, continuing to pet the dog and allow it to bite his fingertips. ❝thank you, so much.❞
you grinned back at him. ❝of course. anything for my best man.❞
gently holding the squirming animal with his left hand, he grabbed your wrist with his other to pull you into bed. you yelped with laugher, pushing the box off the bed and allowing the dog to run over the two of you.
the dog barked in your face before biting at the blankets. ❝what's his name?❞
❝i wanted to let you decide. we can head back to the adoption centre tomorrow to register his name.❞ you laid against him, wiggling your fingers at the pup to taunt him. he lunged for your hand, falling against your stomach.
bucky kissed your temple. ❝how about...old yeller?❞
you blew a raspberry into the air, laughing loudly. ❝that's the name you first thought of? that's terrible.❞
he chortled back, raising a hand in defence. ❝hey! you said i could pick it. it's my birthday after all...❞
you rolled your eyes, moving to get out of bed. you muttered loud enough for him to hear; ❝yeah, and i'm starting to regret it...❞
he growled under his breath, quickly snaking an arm around your waist and pulling back in. you screamed in surprise, landing on his chest and fighting him off when he began to tickle you. ❝b-bucky! knock it off!❞
old yeller barked again, bouncing around you two.
