As we sat there in the police office, waiting to see the sheriff. I didn't feel scared; there was nothing that could scare me more than my mother.
Nicole twisted her fingers in mine and smiled nervously at me.
A tall skinny, dark haired man came into the waiting room. He did not smile, his face was serious.
"Is there something I can do for you kids?"
I nodded. "Yes, I have news about a murder case and i'd like to share it with you"
The sheriff nodded and waved his into his office.
Nicole and I sat in two red chairs in fount of the sheriff's desk.
I handed him the video camera. He took it.
"What's this?" he asked.
"Watch it, it's all the evidence you need to prove my innocent"
The sheriff looked at me for a second and than he realized who I was I think.
"Hold on, your Jaydee Thompson, am I right?"
I nodded.
"Your one brave girl, walking into my office after escaping from prison"
I smiled, hoping he wouldn't send me back there.
"Please just watch, I bag you. You won't regret it!"
Sheriff looked at the camera and than at me.
Nicole sat quietly not moving a muscle.
"Alright, I better not regret this Miss Thompson"
I shook my head. "You won't!"
He nodded. He rose from his chair stuck his head out the door.
"Darlene, could you please bring in that TV in here?"
He sat back down and looked at Nicole.
"I know you, Nicole Jensen, am I right?"
Nicole's eyes darted up quickly to the sheriff face.
"Yes sir" she said quietly
"I'm pretty sure, you should be back at the prison, aren't I right?"
Nicole nodded.
"You're a wanted woman right now, so is your little friend over here"
"I'm aware; escaping from prison is a pretty serious thing"
The sheriff nodded as a woman wheeled in a TV
"Thank you Darlene"
The woman smiled and walked out.
Sheriff hooked a cord into the camera and turned on the TV.
I wasn't sure if I could watch this, it would be worse than my own memory.
Jesse and my mom appear on the TV and I felt my tears well up with tears.
My mother's strong voice screamed at Jesse and he screamed back at her.
I looked over at Nicole; her eyes were glued to the TV screen looking interested in what would happen.
I was the only one who knew what the end would be.
Tears fell down my cheeks and I snapped my eyes shut and covered my ears.
I couldn't bare to see the look on my face as Jesse was killed. The memory of it all was enough, seeing it again but on a TV was a whole lot worse.
"Well, Miss Thompson you currently did have something to show me"
I looked up, and the TV was off and the camera was set back on the sheriff's desk.
"Does this mean I'm free?" I asked.
The Sheriff laughed.
"No, I'm sorry but this is very good evidence. You and your mother will have to go to court and get it sorted out"
"Just go get her now, I mean she's at my house! I mean that tape shows it all"
The sheriff nodded. "Yes Jaydee, but this will have to be shown to a judge and lawyers will have to be involved in order to work this out"
"So what do I do than?"
The sheriff took a deep breath and put his hand on his desk.
"Jaydee, for now you will have to go back to prison until a court date is set up"
I didn't want to go back to the awful place! But I don't think I had much of a choice.
I glanced over at Nicole. "What about Nicole?" I asked without taking my eyes off her.
"Well young lady, you can be on your way, a car will be waiting outside"
The sheriff pressed a button on his phone and than smiled at Nicole.
I didn't want him to leave me alone. Nicole looked at me and put her hand on my thigh.
"Ill see you soon okay" she whispered
I nodded holding back my tears. She stood up and kissed my forehead and brushed her hand across my check and walked away.
She stopped at the door and glanced back at me.
"Jaydee, I will wait for you" she said as he walked out the door.
"Will I ever see her again?" I asked turning to the sheriff
"I don't think so, after your guys escape, you will be sent to different prisons and kept apart"
His words gave me aching pain in my chest and I felt my stomach twist into a knot.
"Ill just fill this paperwork out and we can be on our way, Miss Thompson"
I nodded. I felt tears racing down my cheeks.
I counted each tear as it hit my leg.
"Alright than, should we be off than?" The sheriff asked.
I looked up to him and shrugged. "I guess" I told him
He nodded and stood up from his chair.
There was nothing more I could say to him, nothing more I could think, there was nothing but that knot in my stomach and my heart turning to ice.
"Hands behind your back Miss Thompson"
I sighed and reached my arms backwards. I felt the cold tight handcuffs tighten around my wrists.
They pinched my skin and made my arms ache.
The sheriff pushed me into the back seat of the car. People on the streets pointed and whispered.
I swear my whole world was just taken away from me, there was nothing left.
I just hope this would get me out, I wanted to be free! Then I would find Nicole!
