Shit shit shit shit
"Nice to meet you James, my name is Lily." I offered my hand out to him. A handshake, right? Should be the perfect move to show him that it was nice to meet him and that he could be my friend. Plus, should be the right move to prove to my parents that he was only a friend.
Wrong.
With a ever-so quirky smile, he took my hand and kissed it, like a gentleman. I drew my hand back, but not before he started laughing. A quick glance at my parents showed their flushed faces as they witnessed this scene from the other side of the room. Oh crap, I was in it for sure.
"You know," he started, with a slight British accent, "you look adorable when you blush. Makes you pull off the confused look, like a stupid penguin." I stopped for a second. Was he joking? Flirting? Or just insulting me? My face must have shown me being startled, because he then said, "Aha! There! You're doing it again!"
I crossed my arms as I looked at him, laughing at my face, to my face. "Very funny," I bitterly spoke the words. "Truly a joke that only a boy can come up with." Burn! A blow to his ego. I feigned innocence and playful rubbed his head, messing up his hair.
"Hey!" he exclaimed, stepping away from me to fix his hair. Seriously? A guy who's that worried about his hair? I shook my head as I walked away from him. What a jerk. One thing was for sure- I didn't like James.
---------------
Seeing that only my parent's friends were still at the welcome party (and James's family- ugh), I decided to text Grace.

We messaged like this for a while. Honestly, I didn't pay much attention to the fact that everyone was leaving. It wasn't until I heard silence in the house that I got up and made my way to the living room, thinking I could text Grace in peace on the couch.
Wrong. Again.
Lo and behold James the jerk and his family. With my family. Sitting on the couch. "Lily! Come sit down!" my father enthusiastically encouraged. The only seat left was next to James, who refused to even meet my eyes.
Hell to the no.
I refused to move until I heard my father's voice once more; this time, it was more of a command. "Sit down. Lily. We have something special to tell you. It's a surprise." There was something different about the way he said it. More authority, and less love. I wouldn't be surprised if he hated me. I sat down on the couch and looked ahead, refusing to even glance at James.
Truth is, I didn't know how much he hated me until I heard the words everyone had been waiting to hear. Well, everyone but me.
