John B awoke the next morning with the small blonde cuddled into him fast asleep. The noise of his pet rooster crowing and light footsteps coming up his porch woke him up out of fear. He thought it was probably just JJ or Pope coming early that morning to get away from their families."Get decent, sweetie. We need to talk" Sheriff Peterkin announced her presence walking into the house, looking straight at the two kids cuddled together on the pull out couch. Upon hearing this the boy tried his hardest to get out from under the sleeping blonde without waking her. It was common knowledge that Alaska was anything but a morning person.
"Sorry to break in like this, but DCS called" the cop spoke loudly while waiting on him to come out of his bedroom that he was changing in. Alaska still fast asleep on the couch stirred in her sleep at the sudden noise.
"Can you lower your voice?" John B asked from his room, not wanting the cop to wake up Alaska. "They wanted me to check on you. See how you're doin'. So, how are you besides the--" the cop continued speaking loudly, not doing as the boy asked. Alaska had woken up to this, still insanely tired so she just sat up, not speaking.
"Oh, no, I'm-- I'm great. Yeah, fantastic. Uh... Thanks for comin' by." John B stuttered out, now entering the living room again. Alaska let out a small laugh at the boys awkwardness, announcing that she was awake.
"I'm so glad to hear you say that, John B, but I heard a few things that worried me. Let me see if I can remember. Oh, yeah. One of the things I heard was that your Uncle Teddy, your guardian, hasn't been in the state for three months." the sheriff listed as John B cleaned up a few different things throughout the living room to distract himself. Alaska had now sat up, fully awake and paying complete attention to the conversation.
"That's false" the brunette boy was quick to claim. It was true though Alaska had not seen Teddy around in over three months. She wouldn't dare to say anything. She knew what would happen if she did and she wouldn't be able to live with that.
"You don't have to say anything. I know it's true. I called the school. They said you used to be a good student, but now you're failin' all your classes" she continued. Alaska shifted in her seat watching as the sheriff walked over to the round table picking up a bud that JJ had left.
"No. No, I'm only failing one, and it's history" he was quick to fire back. "Yea and the dude has it out for JB" Alaska finally spoke up, wanting to help her best friend. "Yes, thank you Ala" John B thanked her.
"And I heard there was a fight on the beach yesterday, and a gun was involved." Peterkin kept going. "A gun?" Alaska questioned from the couch oblivious. "Okay, a gun? No." John B denied, the boy was really good at lying, it was like a secret talent of his.
"Did i get in a dustup? Yes, but was there a gun? No. No way." John B scoffed, moving past the sheriff going to sit with Alaska on the couch.
"That's okay. I know who it was. I'll get to him. All I'm worried about right now is makin' sure you're in a safe home." the sheriff would not budge.
