"Get to the basement, I'll sort it out and head back." I yell while grabbing a gun and tucking it into my back pocket. I don't bother changing into my gear. Code 12s are usually not that serious and even if they take a bad turn I'm sure that I can deal with it in a few hours.
I dial Asa's number. "Code 12, give me the details." I speak into the phone tucked between my ear and shoulder while getting into my truck.
"Threat last spotted at 5:34 at Maple Street outside of house 546." I can hear Asa typing furiously into his computer. I glance at my watch, it's 5:39.
"Where is he now?"
"The locator isn't responding." He sounds surprisingly calm. "I'm going to have to look through the security cameras, give me a moment."
"Hurry up." I start driving towards Maple Street.
"Threat located outside house 675, two streets ahead of Maple Street. The owner of the house is Mr.Kowalski, he is recovering from a knee surgery and is most likely defenseless. The threat is showing signs of breaking into the house." Asa's tone is light, and his words are rushed but clear.
"I'm on it." I turn into the correct street and park my truck a few houses away from Mr.Kowalski's. I break into a run towards the house and spot the threat. He seems heavy and muscular, but I shouldn't have to use my gun. I observe first, afraid to make any unwanted moves. "Ace, he doesn't seem like he's trying to break in." I whisper hurriedly into my bleutooth.
"Did you just call me Ace?"
"Seriously not the right time to discuss my choice of nicknames, Asa."
"Okay fine I'm going to try to see if I have access to any audio cameras. Does it look like he's saying anything?" Asa replies.
"I think so." I squint. "Asa! There's someone else. Can you identify the other man?"
"No but I think I gained access to an audio camera."
"Can you hear the audio? Connect the audio to my Bluetooth and disconnect the call."
"I can't disconnect the call, you're always supposed to be on call during a mission. in case of emergencies."
"Asa, just do it. It's a code 12, not that serious and we don't have much time I need to know what they're doing." My voice starts getting a bit louder.
"Macey, we're dealing with a criminal here. The threat is Christian Coul. He's been in and out of jail 6 times, always bailed out by Martin." Asa persuades.
"We're dealing with someone who has relations to Martin? Asa, we need to get him to headquarters." I start walking towards the threat, planning on my next moves as I approach.
"Macey, go back. Our job is to make sure no one is hurt, not to terminate or turn in the threat."
"That is exactly why we shouldn't follow the rules Ace, if he gets out of my sight now he will eventually hurt someone else and I am not going to allow that."
"Macey, the number one rule in basic training is to ALWAYS obey the orders. We weren't told to take action, we were just ordered to prevent the harm that might have taken place."
"Asa, I am ordering you to cut the call and hook the audio to my Bluetooth. I'm a protector and spy, I have authority over you. Do it." I didn't want to order him. We both knew I had power over him, partially because I was trained and mostly because of my title 'spy' but we never talked about it. I hated flaunting my authority.
"Chase, I am a senior tech, and operator. Your authority doesn't compel me to do anything." He sounds tired, like he's talking to a little kid. "Now turn around and leave the premises. Mr.Kowalski is safe, that was our aim."
Confusion clouds me. If he's a senior then he has to be at least 20, senior training takes a long time, that too for a tech. He doesn't necessarily hold any power over me but I don't have any authority over him either. The company always assigns a tech who is compelled to follow the spy's orders, I have no clue why they would assign Asa to me if I had no authority during missions.
"I'll leave the premises." I reply. "But just connect the audio to my bluetooth. I need to know what's happening there and who Christian is talking to." I say before running back to the truck. I don't disconnect the call but I turn off my tracker. I'm not letting Christain run loose in the streets of California. If anyone gets hurt, it will be my fault.
"Macey, I told you to leave the premises not advance on the threat." Asa scolds.
"Asa, I don't know how you got my location, but I can't turn around. This is my responsibility and I will be held accountable to the consequences."
"Macey, I'm a senior tech. If you think that turning off your tracker will stop me from spotting your location, then you're stupid. If I can't stop you, then the only option I have is to help you."
I smirk. I never back down on a mission.
"I picked up a conversation about making some sort of transaction. Whatever the 'transaction' is, it has been delayed and Christian doesn't seem happy about it." Asa says before connecting the audio to my bluetooth.
"You promised that you would have it today." I hear a low growl, undoubtedly Christian's voice.
"Christian, I tried. It wasn't in my hands." Another calmer voice says.
"What do you mean you tried?" Christian's starting to breath heavily and for a moment I worry for the safety of the other man. "Do you know how much I risked to be here today? This is the first time I'm in public after the bail. Someone's on my back."
I suck in a breath. Either Christian knows that some authority like the police are after him again or there is someone else threatening him. Neither option is good news.
"Christian, It's not just you who's in trouble here. The whole gang is. You're lucky that I'm even helping you." The other man spat at him.
"I'm leaving, it isn't safe to be out right now." Christian backs down. And with that the audio goes silent.
"It's either weapons or drugs. There can't be anything else he'd need so urgently. According to your sources, he got bailed out of jail only last week." I speak into the bluetooth as it connects to Asa again. "I'm going to follow, I need more information.
"Look, I lost their location. Just turn around. We'll work on this tomorrow, I promise I'll help you." Asa says pleadingly and I hate that he has a valid point. I let out a frustrated shout.
"Asa, you can't stop me." I say as a last retort hoping that he'll stop persuading me to return.
"Stop acting immature. I said that I'll help you, we won't leave the case here. Just turn around for now." He sounds like he's talking to a kid again.
There's nothing that makes me more pissed off than someone talking to me like I'm dumb, but I'm used to it. Being a 17 year old girl spy often leads people to underestimate you. I know that Asa doesn't underestimate me, but I hate that he called me immature.
"I am not happy about this." I say in the coldest voice possible.
"And I don't expect you to be. Just trust me with this one. Mace, please."
I vowed to be mad at him for the rest of my life.
