The Yakshi and the Doctor

Chapter 15: The Meeting

Mahadevan was expecting mohini to play spoilsport by preventing his meeting with rukmini. So it was a surprise for him to be able to see the doctor first and then rukmini without any effort. After meeting doctor, mahadevan had gone straight to meet rukmini. She was in the general ward looking after the patients. Rukmini was shocked to see Mahadevan approaching her directly. He even knew that she loved the doctor. It was a total shocker for her as she had not breathed a word about it to anyone ever. 

Mahadevan directly came to the point and explained how mohini was a threat to all the people of the area and the doctor in particular. She had to be put down at all costs. Mahadevan further explained how rukmini had to play a key role in this to succeed. He also explained to her that once mohini is put down, she can marry doctor as per her wish. This would be a outcome that would benifit all, he added. Rukmini who came from a middle class upbringing knew pretty well that if an offer sounds too good to be true, it isnt true. The present offer of Mahadevan also fell in to that category for her. But she didn't want to directly anger such a powerful tantric. Who knows what all he could do, she reasoned to herself. It would also not hurt her to know what specific plan Mahadevan had in his mind to defeat mohini. So rukmini directly explained to Mahadevan that she was a nurse and had little knowledge about mantras and tantric practices to be of any help in this battle. 

Now as rukmini was coming to his side as per his plans, mahadevan was feeling more confident and revealed about his thoughts. He told rukmini that none of the mantras or spells are going to work against mohini as she was a good yakshi who used to kill evil persons only. So rukmini had to bring mohini in to confidence and make her wear magic chain specifically created for this purpose by Mahadevan. But what Mahadevan didnt tell rukmini yet was even if mohini wears the chain, she wont be destroyed. But she will be under the control of Mahadevan. He himself has not yet got any clue how he can destroy her forever. His current plan was to control her and take her away with him.

So he asked rukmini to meet him tommorrow in hospital to take their plan forward if she was ok with it. Rukmini said for greater good of people of wyanad, she was ready to help Mahadevan to defeat the yakshi. Mahadevan was very pleased with the outcome and his plans left the hospital with his assistant's.

Doctor who was watching the movements of Mahadevan was left wondering why he was interacting with rukmini. So he decided to enquire with rukmini herself. He asked her about what the meeting was all about. As rukmini couldn't tell him the whole truth, she just told that Mahadevan wanted her help to defeat the yakshi and how she had agreed to support him. The doctor felt bad at the decision of rukmini. But there was no way he could tell her to change her decision. So he said ok and left the place. But rukmini could clearly from the expressions of the doctor that he didn't approve of her action and had felt totally let down by her. She felt bad herself about the path she had chosen. More so after Mahadevan had told her that mohini was a good yakshi who killed only bad people. So logically doctor didn't have any threat from her. So rukmini in theory shouldn't help the tantric. But matters of head and heart speak different languages contradicting one another especially when one is in love.

After finishing her work for the day, rukmini had gone to her hostel room where she stayed. She was totally immersed in her thoughts. She had tough time convincing herself that her action was right and in interest of people at large. Greater good for greatest number. But her heart kept pointing out that she was trying to help a person who was trying to bring down an avenging angel who was protecting good people of wyanad in her own way. But now that she had agreed to help the tantric, she didn't know how to go back on her words. Her mind was in a state of whirlpool.

Looking at the state of mind of rukmini, mohini who was keenly watching all the proceedings from afar since morning decided to appear in front of rukmini. Since she had already met her while working in hospital, she decided to appear in front of her in same look. Rukmini was surprised to see mohini the intern standing in front of her bed. She was sure that a moment ago there was no one there. So she asked mohini where had she vanished and how did she manage to suddenly come to her room. Mohini laughed out loudly saying it's all child's play for a yakshi. Rukmini was totally scared by this revelation and didnt know how to react to mohini.
