The Yakshi and the Doctor

Chapter 17: Confrontation

The people of Wyanad woke up to the rythmic chants of ancient tantric rituals and mantras the next day. Mahadevan was using spells which he had never used before. Infact no one have ever used such strong spells to ward off mohini till date. Even she was caught off guard here. Her initial amusement changed in to terror as time progressed. She was compelled by the strength of the spells to come to the place of  Mahadevan n sit in the place earmarked for her. No mage had even been able to achieve it. This in itself was some kind of victory for Mahadevan. But he was careful. He was purposefully projecting himself as weak all along.

The appearance of mohini in front of the mage had sent ripples among the people of wyanad. No one had expected that Mahadevan could conquer mohini so easily. Doctor and rukmini had also heard about the news and rushed to the spot. They were shocked to see mohini under the control of Mahadevan. Doctor was distraught seeing it and was heart broken. Even rukmini was astonished as she had made all preparations to help mohini escape from the wrath of the magician. This result was a shock even to her. She couldn't help but ask Mahadevan, how he could control mohini without her help. Mahadevan who was busy with his spells signed to her for keeping quiet.

Mohini seemed really tired as the various spells were affecting her very badly. But still she was fighting hard not to submit and surrender before Mahadevan. But it seemed to be a losing battle. At end of the marathon session, mahadevan truly conquered mohini and it was a heart breaking site for all the people who used to worship mohini. After ensuring that he has succeeded in his task, mahadevan started to hit the nail on the palm tree chanting mantras to truly ensure that mohini is gone for ever. Now that he has succeded in his task, he called doctor and mohini. He informed them that he had created the elaborate drama of seeking their help to fool mohini and them in to a false sense of security. He had learned ancient tantric secrets to destroy mohini before coming here. 

Doctor who was in wild rage wanted to attack Mahadevan for destroying mohini. But rukmini consoled him and tried to take him away. Mahadevan couldn't help himself but smile sarcastically at the feeble attempts of doctor to harm him. Mahadevan called rukmini aside and mockingly told her about how he knew about their plan to defeat him. But unfortunately they had failed and he had succeeded. Rukmini told him that she had agreed to help mohini as she was affraid of her. Afterall she was a yakshi and rukmini was a poor human lady. Mahadevan was convinced by her arguments. He told rukmini that she doesn't need to worry any more as mohini is gone forever. But Mahadevan revealed that in the process he had spend all the magical reservoir of strenght he had acquired in last 40 years. He need to restart his austerities again from scratch to regain his powers. Rukmini wished him all the very best

The evil men of wyanad rejoiced as they were finally free from the terror of mohini and could finally start a life without fear. They gave a lot of prizes to Mahadevan. But Mahadevan didnt have any use for any of it as he was going back to Himalayas to restart his vows. So he distributed all the money and gold he got for banishing mohini among the poor people. The people couldn't help but wonder if Mahadevan was a good guy or a evil one. Seeing all this even doctor was confused. But he felt bitter that the love of his life was now lost forever. He receded slowly back to his old ways and kept himself busy in work. The strange thing was after disappearance of mohini, even lakshmiamma also disappeared without any trace. For the doctor, it was like a double whammy. He had grown to like and depend on lakshiamma for her constant presence in his life. Moreover he missed the tasty food prepared by lakshiamma. He enquired with every one, but she was nowhere to be seen.

Rukmini couldn't see the sad plight of the doctor confessed her feelings for him. The doctor excused himself saying he loved only mohini and now that she was gone, he was not interested in any such things. The doctor started to walk away, but someone called the doctor from behind. It was clearly not the voice of rukmini. It seemed to be like the voice of mohini in her human form. It couldn't be true. Turning back he was astonished to see the smiling mohini standing in place of rukmini. When he asked mohini, how it was possible?. Rukmini replied saying what is not possible?. He saw rukmini in place of mohini. Surely his mind was playing tricks with him. He nodded his head and started to walk away once more.
