Counter shading: Where the backs of tails are darker so predators looking down won't see them and lighter shades on the front of tails so predators looking up won't see them.

-Arctic: They live in cold water and have blubber or thick scales to keep warm. Arctic mers' hair can be most likely light blonde, white, or silver. Their tail colors are usually white, silver, light grey, light blue, light purple, or even light pink or green. Tails can be a blend of these colors or just solid. Arctic mers have medium flukes and sharp teeth or claws. They live in ice caves near the North and South poles. No counter shading. Powers: hydrokinetic, cryokinesis, hydro-cryokinesis.

-Deep Sea: kind of like lone wolves. Very secluded, mysterious, and aren't very helpful. Hair can be dark green, dark brown, black, dark blue, dark red, or dark purple with similar color schemes for tails. Deep sea mermaids have large flukes for speed and long distance swimming. Their eyes are adjusted to the dark and have special ears that won't pop with altitude (most mermaid ears have this feature but deep sea mers have it the most). No counter shading. Powers: Hydrokenesis, hydro-cryokenesis, and siren singing.

Open ocean mermaids: are from all around the world. I am a Pacific mermaid. Usually they stay in large pods, to protect and care for each other. Open ocean mers travel often and some pods may migrate like birds (south in winter). They have long tails, large flukes, and side fins for long distances and speed. Their tails can be purple, blue, and/or green in various shades, along with counter shading. Hair colors: brown, black, sometimes blonde.

Freshwater mermaids: they live in lakes, ponds, rivers and streams

Freshwater mermaids: they live in lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. Freshwater mermaids re pretty social and they have counter shading depending on how murky the water they live in is. Their skin is tinted green for camouflage and the tail fluke size depends on the size of body of water they live in. Freshwater mermaids' tail colors are: green, blue, brown, or a murky purple. Their hair color is: brown, black, sometimes blonde. Powers are most often, aerokenesis, hydrokenesis, or hydro-pyrokenesis.

Tropical mermaids: fun-loving and easygoing. They don't travel a lot so they have smaller flukes. Their tails are brightly colored pinks, oranges, reds, purples, or blues because they live near reefs. Freshwater mermaids live in pods and are very friendly to other mers. They tend to live in warmer waters like Florida or California.

This info is from various websites and books so if you want me to add/change something that is incorrect, I will do more research and update the book. Comment your mermaid type!
