CHAPTER FOURTEEN
"IN YOUR COURT!"

the group of four boys sat at the circular table, textbooks propped open in front of them as they scribbled equations in their notebooks, foreheads creased in concentration.

"i will never understand geometry. high school is a joke." dustin sighed in frustration, slamming his textbook close.

"oh come on, it's not that hard." mike murmured as his eyes remained glued to his textbook, his gaze occasionally wavering back to his notebook to copy down the material he was reading.

"of course you say that! all you do is focus on school." dustin retorted, a sneer curling on his lips. the raven-haired boy rolled his eyes in response, his eyes still stuck on the paper his pencil was gliding upon.

"yeah, school and el." lucas teased his friend, causing snickers from both will and dustin. mike shook his head quickly, his eyes finally breaking their from his schoolwork.

"shut up, t-that's not true! she's just a friend!" mike's cheeks reddened as he spoke in a rushed tone, clearly flustered. lucas scoffed, his eyes averting to his embarrassed friend.

"just a friend? mike, we all saw you stare at her ass when she bent down to pick up her pencil in biology yesterday. you aren't that slick." lucas affirmed, causing mike's brown eyes to widen as dustin and will continued to laugh with one another.

"w-what?! i didn't do that! ew, gross!" mike lied, his voice squeaking as he shuddered. dustin rose his eyebrows, challenging mike as he opened his mouth to contribute to lucas's accurate argument.

just before the curly-headed boy could add on, the party was interrupted by el. she stopped at their table in the library, a small smile on her rosy lips as she greeted her friends.

"hey guys!" she waved, pulling out a chair from under the wooden table. she placed her backpack down beside her, her elbows resting on the table.

"hey, el!" mike exclaimed, perhaps a bit too enthusiastically. el giggled, her golden waves of soft hair brushing behind her ear with the stroke of her dainty fingertips.

mike watched her as she looked so effortlessly beautiful, a soft sigh escaping his lips involuntarily as she reached for her geometry textbook. her hair was flowing down against her shoulder blades that day, her caramel eyes glistening underneath the ceiling lights. a red sweater clutched to her curves, adorning her slim body so perfectly that mike thought he was about to drool.

"you guys are working on geometry too? i don't understand it at all, i'm hopeless when it comes to math." el giggled, flipping through the pages of her textbook as she searched for the chapter they were focusing on.

"right! it makes no sense! not to me at least, but mike said —" dustin began to agree with the dancer, before his words were abruptly cut off for the second time in the past few minutes.

"yeah, this is super hard! i'm like, totally hopeless at this, too. do you understand any of it?" mike fabricated, the three other boys sharing knowing glances as they picked up their backpacks and filed out of the library.

"i wish. i need to do well on this test though." el let out an exasperated huff, her chin resting in her hand as she drummed her fingers along her skin. mike's breath hitched as he watched her dreamily, his heart thumping wildly in his chest as her eyes remained fixated on her work.
