Chapter 15: You Look So Cute When You're Angry

"A-a-Amelia?" I stammer. "Like Amelia Amelia? Amelia Johnson?"

She nods. "Yes. Her. The one from yesterday."

"Oh. Well, um, go ahead."

"Don't tell anyone. She's letting me tell you, but don't ever mention it. She's lived with it for a long time. And it's been really tough on her."

Get on with the secret. "Of course," I promise.

"Amelia's lesbian."

"WHAT?!"

"I know it's shocking, but she's been like this ever since she could remember. The only two people who know about this are me and Jonelle, the girl who we hung out with in elementary school before I moved to Tiger Canyon in 7th grade."

I cannot believe this. "Then why was she trying to find a guy to go with to the dance?"

"She's hoping that no one will suspect. She wants you to know that she's sorry for the way she treated you. It's because she used to like you, and it just made her so mad. She was really hoping to change as she got older, but so far it's not really working."

"Wow. Tell her I'm super sorry for the way I treated her. I didn't know all this. It's kind of shocking."

Sophelia nods. "I know. But she's taking your advice. She's going to the dance with herself."

I crack a smile. "Glad to hear my wise words of wisdom are being put to use."

"Yes. Very extremely wise words of wisdom."

"Anyways, I have to finish sending these letters. Do you ever get any?"

"Eh, just a few from some kids I've met. Not much. Look, I've got to go, but I'll see you around, okay?"

I nod. "Definitely. Try to get Plant Discovery for Science Clinic. I think Jamie's leading it."

"Okay."

I turn back to my letters and answer a few of them. Then I go over and "send" it. I pull out my book to read while I wait for the others to come.

"Zennzy Sanderson," a voice says from right next to my ear, making me jump up in surprise.

"CHARLIE! JESUS CHRIST STOP DOING THAT!!!"

He smirks and sits down in the chair next to me. "You look so cute when you're angry."

If looks could kill, he'd be dead by now, but of course, I'm thinking cute cute cute. Just like when Augustus was like "I can't believe I have a crush on a girl with such cliche wishes" and Hazel's like she can't stop thinking crush crush crush. Anyways, irrelevant.

"Where's Kevin?" I demand.

"Let me guess. Qirleya figured out about us."

"No. My dear brother needs to learn to keep his mouth shut. He's always been a blabbermouth."

"So she did find out about us. From Kevin, right?"

"Ugh. Fine. Yeah, she figured out and she was bugging me about it. Like why does Kevin have to be her boyfriend, of all people?"

Charlie groans and tears his hands through his hair. "All right, where's the bastard?"

"HOW SHOULD I-" I spot Kevin. "Oh! There he is!"

I march over to my brother and drag him out of the building. "Hey!" he protests. "What are you doing?"

"All right. Here it goes. Ahem. WHY DID YOU TELL QIRLEYA?"

"I-"

"CHARLIE AND I ARE NOT A THING! IT'S JUST ONE FRIGGIN DANCE!"

"But-"

"NO EXCUSES! LEARN TO KEEP MY PRIVATE LIFE CONFIDENTIAL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!"

"Okay okay. Relax sis," he whines. "She asked me if there was any tea going on and I told her okay? Jeez."

"Charlie's probably going to yell at yo-" I'm not given the chance to finish because he comes right then and says something that sounds like "KEVIN SANDERSON. YOU WILL BE SORRY YOU EVER CROSSED MY PATH!"

I make a quick escape and head back inside, leaving Kevin to deal with the second round of yelling from Charlie.
