The next day, after long 9 hour surgeries on either Yugi and Mahad, Mana had been scurrying right and left anxiously doing work and checking in on them when she could.
Which wasn't often.
The surgeries gone...okay. Mahad was currently unconscious in bed with several bandages and gauze to stop the bleed of his bullet wounds. Yugi wasn't in a very good condition either, though.
After nearly having two cardiac arrests and having a ruptured appendix from the bullet holes everywhere in his body, he had come extremely close. He began to go into shock...meaning that he had started dying. The doctors described it as him dying completely...
But then coming back to life.
But they didn't know how he had done it.
Neither did Mana. Now, Yugi was in the complex ICU, being monitored for everything. The doctors weren't sure and still aren't sure on how well he is doing. He is currently stable, but they still have to have him on the monitor and IV machines just in case.
Mana didn't know if that was a good sign, or a bad one.
"How's he doing?"
Mana stopped a group of doctors in the ICU during her break time. They seemed to be going through papers on patients that had been in the Intensive Care Unit and were either getting better or were getting worse in their eyes.
They had just came across Yami's papers as Mana ran into them. The first one to look up was the one who was closest and who had a good view of the clipboard being shown.
"Karim?" Mana eyed him once she noticed that he was extremely distressed.
Karim only looked back at her, seeming to be too stunned for words. He looked back at the screen one more time before looking back at her.
"How is he?" Mana repeated, tilting her head in Karim's direction, "You guys are looking at Yami's papers, correct?"
"...correct." Karim replied, carefully choosing his words, "We...are analyzing his condition and how to deal with it."
Mana walked closer up to him.
"Well, what does he look like?" She questioned him yet once again after not getting an answer.
Karim slightly gulped and shook his head, clearly pained, letting out under his breath, "...worse and worse and worse..."
Mana paled. Her eyes widened and she bit her lip, staring at him as she also began to dread the worst.
"H-How..." She muttered, "...much worse?"
"...we had to move him..." Karim simply said, "He had to go into the Complex ICU for further treatment, but the experts here are all doubtful...
"As much as we all love the guy with all our hearts...
"...and it would hurt to see him go...
"...we just don't think there is much else we can do to restore Yami to his original health..." Karim said, staring at his shoes, not having the strength to look back up.
Mana was speechless. She didn't know what to say. Her eyes welled with tears when she realized that Yami was dying.
And that wasn't a figure of speech.
He was so close to the end of life, he was constantly on critical mode, on tons of life supports only to keep him going.
Eventually, he just wasn't going to be "all there" anymore. He would be a waking corpse. Then, what would they do with him?
3 words: "6 Feet Under".
Mana shook her head internally, only stepping back in shock externally. Karim tried to grab her for reassurance, but she was already down the hall, in deep search for Yami.
~~~~~~~~
Yugi woke up a few hours later, his body weak and aching. He was extremely dizzy and found it hard to do anything. The entire room was spinning, and it didn't stop.
"...help..." Yugi squeaked weakly.
It must have been a side effect from the two bullets that went flying through his head.
Was this ever going to stop?
"...Yugi." A voice said beside him, catching slightly Yugi by surprise.
He slowly turned to what the source was.
Mana stood there, her eyes red and puffy, but she tried to shrug it off as though it was nothing. Yugi's eyes widened, and the room began to slow its spinning.
"M-Mana..?" Yugi asked, "...is every...thing...okay..?"
Mana remained silent for a couple of moments before finally replying: "...no."
Yugi paled. He didn't know what to expect to hear if he asked what it was that was bothering her so much. He fell silent as the room finally stopped spinning from his dizziness that was probably from his wounds.
"Yugi..." Mana said before Yugi could even get a single word out, "..Things aren't looking good...especially for Yami..."
Yugi stared at her, a lump forming in his throat. He still didn't know what to expect, and dreaded it. By Mana's tone of voice and by the way she acted, Yugi could just tell by looking at her...
That is wasn't good.
At all.
Mana still continued with a sniff and a sigh before finishing.
"Yami has g-gotten increasingly worse..." Mana said, swallowing, "He...was moved deeper into th-the ICU, into the...'complex ICU'. His health is depleting at a pace that we can hardly keep up with, and we don't know if we'll ever be able to bring him back to his normal health at this rate."
Yugi paled, slowly shaking his head under the mask that was strapped onto his face. This couldn't be happening. It just couldn't be happening. Yami was supposed to be getting better. Not worse.
And another question.
Why Him???
Why couldn't it have been someone else???
Like...Yugi???
Not Yami...he's gone through far to much.
And he's only going through more.
It broke Yugi's heart to picture Yami like he probably was, wires all over his body; tubes going into his body hooked on to several tubes; large IV machines monitoring his nutritional status, which was probably growing worse by the day. Mana grew silent as Yugi took it all in, his eyes brimming with tears.
Mana gripped his weak hand.
Yugi Didn't notice.
Yami...please... Yugi thought, D-Don't die...just...don't die....I d-don't want to l-lose you...if I did... My l-life...would basically...b-be...over...Y-You...are my...M-Mou Hitori...N-N-No Boku...
...don't take that...
...Away from me...
