Chapter 44

Yugi sat on a nearby bench, hugging his legs into his chest, his tears streaming down his face.

This was a second time....why did this have to keep happening???

If it happened again...

That was it.

Or at least, that's how it typically was. If the body gave up a third time, it usually didn't come back.

Yami was well on his way to doing just that.

Yugi sobbed into his knees and curled up, crying harder and harder. He could hear the panicking surgeons in the OR who, by the sound of it, weren't making much progress and every single minute counted.

Yami was teetering between life and death and as the moments ticked by, he was gradually entering the apex of death, giving up completely.

And he couldn't feel anyone to support him.

Suddenly, a voice sounded from Yugi's side and he looked up, his tears still falling.

He came to meet gazes with a brunette hair boy and a blonde haired girl. It was Alexis and Jaden, and they both seemed very concerned. They knew about Yami, but they didn't know it exactly.

"Yugi?" Alexis asked, her voice understanding.

"Is everything alright, buddy?" Jaden asked, rubbing Yugi's back.

Yugi shakily shook his head no, biting his lip.

"N-No..." He muttered, choking back more sobs, "Nothing...is going okay R-R-right now....nothing...a-at all...."

Jaden looked at him sadly and tilted his head. He pulled him closer.

"What do you mean?" He asked, concerned.

"Isn't Yami supposed to be okay??" Alexis questioned with him.

Yugi burst into another round of tears and shook his head.

"H-His....scar....R-reopened.....and....th-the b-b-blood was....e-everywhere!!!" Yugi cried into Jaden's shoulder, burying his face, "A-And then...his heart....h-had a h-h-hole th-that....a-also.....reopened....."

Jaden and Alexis paled more with every word that left Yugi's mouth. Jaden tightened his grip on Yugi and stared him straight in the eyes.

"W-WHAT??" He gasped, feeling lump form in the back of his throat.

"B-But...." Alexis's voice quivered, "He....W-Was gonna.....be o-okay...."

Yugi only continued to cry. Jaden hugged him in comfort, his eyes watering. He shook his head slowly.

"B-But...." Jaden said, "Th-There has....to b-be....something....we can d-do..."

But Yugi couldn't hear him, because suddenly, a strong drowsiness took him over and he fell fast asleep, muttering, "All.....we....c-can.....do.....is.....pr....ay....."

And his eyes fell closed.

Yugi was in Yami's house in an instant following that moment. He glanced around, finding messy halls and rooms.

Pictures on Yami's wall were broken or marked in red. His television was shattered to pieces, his curtains were torn, papers were all over the floor. There were patches of clothes, bloody and not.

And as Yugi went further into the house, the scenes got worse.

Suddenly, as he strolled, his jaw dropping from these sights, he heard a loud thump, and then a deafening scream. Then, it was followed by laughter.
