I brush my hair up to the top of my head, tying it up into a loose bun. I catch Christopher's eyes in the mirror, as he walks up behind me. I lean back against his chest, as his arms wrap around my waist. His lips brush against my temple, "You feeling better this morning Audge?" He asks, stepping back, allowing me to turn around and face him.
"I'm just tired Chris." I say a small smile on my face, "It's been a long few weeks." The smile falls from my face and I look away from his blue eyes, and towards the sleeping dogs on the floor.
"Hey," His usually low voice taking on a softer tone, "I love you. You did the right thing darlin' and I know it was hard. I know it hurts to think about, it hurts me too Audrey. You mean everything to me, you know that." I blink against the emotion, and turn back to him stepping into his arms. "I've got you darlin'. I've got you." He rests his chin on the top of my head, arms holding me close to his warm and sturdy chest. I stand in his arms for several minutes, listening to his heart beat, and allowing myself to treasure the sound.
I shift in his arms looking up at him, his handsome face stares back at me. I reach up with one hand resting it along his cheek, feeling the stubble against my skin. I stretch up, our mouths meeting for a brief kiss before I move back, putting my forehead against his chest. "I love you Chris. It's one of the scariest things in the world, but I need you with me. Thank you for being here through it all."
He leans down joining our lips again, "I will be here as long as you want me to, I'm not leaving again." He lets go of my waist and brushes the stray tears from my face. I step away and look over at the two dogs and see the line of drool hanging from Pumba's jowl. Linda Lou, lays with her head on the larger dogs back watching us with her large brown eyes.
"I should get out to the barn, the horses are going to be getting restless and want turning out." I say walking out of the bedroom and down the hall. I hear Chris's footsteps behind me followed by the sound of clicking nails as the dogs come racing out of the room, not wanting to be left behind.
"I have to head off to work sweetheart, I'll see you this afternoon." I nod and smile as he kisses my cheek.
"Be safe Chris. I love you." I say smiling at him as we move down the steps from the porch.
He opens the door of his truck, swinging up onto the seat, "I love you too Audrey, don't miss me to much." He grins at me, as he pulls the door closed and drives down the drive way. I shake my head and move to the barn to let the horses out for some outside time.
