Two months later I lean my head to the side rubbing my neck as Titan follows me out of the stall, his graying coat shining as we step out into the sun. "Alright big boy, lets go see your new friend." I lead him to the largest pasture where Tina grazes, her belly growing as the date for her foal grows closer. I open the gate and release him from his halter, watching as he canters off kicking up his back feet as he goes. I laugh as he races around the grass until he slides to a stop in front of Tina. "Okay you two, be nice to each other and share the dandelions."
Moving back to the barn, Pumba flops down in front of me and huffs. "Really Pumba?" I shake my head as I move around him watching Linda as she walks down the aisle in front of me before she hops up on the padded bench near the small office. She blinks up at me for a moment and closes her eyes, letting out a heavy sigh before drifting off to sleep.
I work through two stalls before I push the wheel burrow out of the barn to the manure pile, where I quickly dump the contents and drag the empty wheel burrow behind me. I work through two more stalls and stop as I reach Tinas. I repeat the process of dumping the manure into the ever growing pile and turn to head to the barn. I stop when I hear the sound of tires on gravel and look down the long drive leading up my property. I turn back to the barn and shove the wheel burrow into the opening of Tinas stall before heading back to the front of the barn. I catch sight of the old beat up truck pulling up in front of me, thinking that theres something familiar about it. The truck pulls to a stop next to mine, near my house, and Pumba races towards the vehicle as the driver pushes the door open, stepping down. Linda Lou stands next to me, her tail wagging as she looks between me and the man at the truck. Pumba is now sitting at the end of the truck bed, his whole butt wiggling as he struggles to stay still. I furrow my eyebrows trying to think of who both of my dogs may like, Linda especially, who is normally picky about people. "Pumba, come." I say as I step forward Lina next to me, still wagging her tail in excitement. My mastiff lets out a whine and walks back to me, looking back to the man where he now stands at the end of his truck looking around my property. I move closer, having both happy dogs at my side. "Can I help you with something?" I ask stopping my steps and moving my hand to rest on my hip.
"Only if you know where I can find Audrey Osborne. This is listed as her last know address."
"And how would you know that?" I ask growing un-easy.
He takes one step closer and I stand my ground staring at him. "I'm the newest deputy in the local police station."
"Do I know you?" I ask scanning his face looking for something familiar. I see his eyes and freeze. I remember those deep blue-gray eyes from years ago, the ones that just left.
"Christopher." I say under my breath, but apparently not quiet enough.
He looks back from where his gaze rested on Linda Lou, to land on me. "Audrey."
