This chapter hints at more adult themes throughout, but doesn't actually have any graphic description. It just references the night before in passing conversation and has one mild swear word near the end. I just felt as though I should give warning. It's nothing to really worry about. This one is set during Rtte, later in Hiccup and Ash's relationship when they are very comfortable with one another.
The room was quiet. Nothing could be heard but the gentle breathing of the small girl who lay sprawled out under her blanket. Streaming through the window, she was encased in a golden square of sunlight, that warmed her naked arms and shoulders poking out of the top of the covers. Hiccup was left in a state of drowsiness, woken by the brightness in the room, yet not bothering to move. Instead she lazed on her bed, basking in the glow of the warm summer sun - completely at ease.
The sun was bright and clearly high in the sky, suggesting it was around late morning. Normally, she would feel guilty for sleeping in so long, however today felt justified. The previous night, she had been forced to take the sunset patrol and the night patrol as the twins had decided to pick a fight with one another when it came time for them to do it. Additionally, her needy boyfriend had arrived back from a week of missing her on Berk, preventing sleep until at least after midnight. Ash had been toying with the idea of training some younger vikings on the edge for months, since the A-team did so well. He'd finally proposed the idea to the council and spent the past week on Berk preparing the children for their trip. They'd be spending another couple of weeks on Dragons Edge, training with the gang, before flying home. A disadvantage of this, was that , since the beginning of their relationship, Hiccup and Ash had spent little time apart, making the short week feel like a decade. The couple had spent the night of Ash's return passionately entwined and refusing to let go of one another.
Now, Hiccup lolled bare under the blanket, not concerned about redressing after that night and instead giving in to her exhaustion and aching body. At some point during her slumber, Ash must have left for the day as she no longer felt the over-sized blonde spooning her back. Hiccup appreciated that. She didn't want to be woken. She rather preferred to relish in the bliss of the morning after.
Well, that was until she felt a large hand shake her shoulder and a voice whisper, "Hiccup?"
Ash shook her again, "Hiccup."
Irritated by the rude interruption, Hiccup rolled over indignantly.
"What do you want. I was trying to sleep."
With a smile, Ash straightened up and explained, "I need you to get up and help me train the younger vikings. I promised them you'd be there for at least one of their lessons while they're here and they're really excited about it."
Really? That's what he disturbed me for. Hiccup scowled, before rolling back over, "No." It may have been an unreasonably grumpy attitude - but she was tired. She had been happy and relaxed until he had crudely barged into her little bubble of euphoria and set her in a bad mood.
"But I promised them," Ash tried to encourage.
"Well, you shouldn't make promises on my behalf," she stated sullenly.
She heard Ash sigh behind her and repeat, "but I promised them."
"No." Hiccup echoed stubbornly, "You'll just have to break that promise. I don't care."
Ash sighed again. Why was she being so difficult? The kids would be so disappointed. They'd been bouncing around all week at the prospect of spending time with Hiccup. She'd become quite a celebrity around the village over the years (especially with the younger crowd). They constantly tried to copy her appearance and actions. People were desperate to be trained by the legendary, original rider and spending time with her at the edge was a novelty.
