did you wait for me alone?
the small island where our fumbling promises and secrets began

beomgyu looks back as he heard a soft, hushed voice that was whispering. his heart tightens.

“where are you?” he whispers back, hands shaking as the cold wind passed by from the insides of the palace.

i remember the song of your star and mine
in that, we were stars
that melody that shone as a dream
please don't forget it always

the king let out a breath that he didn't even know he was holding, and he felt his eyes tear up at the mention of stars. then, he felt a small, little thing crawl up on his ankle. he looked own and there was a snake, a tiny one, one that you would see in a fable or a small novella written by a grown-up for grown-ups and children alike. he gets startled, but the snaked hisses softly.

“do not fret, your majesty. i am not here to harm you. i was sent by an important figure to find you.”

the snake spoke in a soft tone, probably to match his master's own. beomgyu shivers and shakes his ankle so that the snake can untangle itself from it.

“are you denying my master's message?”

“no, but i just wanted you to get off of me. i don't fancy snakes, even the ones your size. i..hope you understand.”

the snake nodded and slithers around, “very well, your majesty. follow me, will you?”

“how about my guests? how about yeonjun-hyung?”

“they'll be fine.”

they stopped speaking afterwards and  the snake led the way for beomgyu, and before he knew it, they were outside, and at a very familiar landscape that he never visited in four years. it brought back so many unsaid memories— the moment he climbs on the curtain, the moment where he and beomgyu spend countless of nights together, falling deeper for each other, learning about each other and changing.

before, choi beomgyu was a reckless, stupid, and immature young boy who wanted to be free. now? he's cautious, gentle, and tries his best to rid the past he shamefully regrets. that boy changed him for the better, but now...

beomgyu could still feel taehyun's warmth, his soft smile and the tender kisses he saved only for beomgyu, the first man he loved in such a long time, and the beautifully articulate words and spells that beomgyu's can't memorize. there were little gaps in his memories, but he could still vividly remember the very first time he kissed him— the boy was heaven.

he remembers. he still remembers. and it haunts him. the forest felt..empty.

a stray tear left his eye and he wipes it away, and the forest was filled with quiet lights and the flowers were both wilted and blooming— their protector is gone, after all. who would take care of them but the nymphs and faeries he met once? but the boy who was the essence of the forest he's walking through right now was gone. turned into ashes.

the snake stops, and beomgyu sees a cloaked and masked figure, sitting, waiting.

the figure seemed to have noticed his presence, and immediately stood up while the red snake crawls up to his body and to the figure's shoulder.

“your majesty, i am glad you have agreed to meet me here,” a soft, melodious voice came from the figure. the figure walks, and beomgyu felt like suffocating from how his aura alone makes his presence seem so large.

“what do you need me for?” beomgyu asked shakily. he's terrified of this figure's presence.

the mask, intricately designed with golden symbols beomgyu knows all too well (symbols of moon angels), and the black mask had cat ears attatched to it. the figure's cloak embraced him, and he felt warm and cold all at the same time.

“there's no need to be afraid, beomgyu,” whispers the figure, “there will be a time where this will all make sense.”

“how? what will make sense? i'm scared. i don't want— i don't want to see a future that isn't happy and peaceful for the kingdom—”

“it's not about the kingdom,” the figure said, and beomgyu could sense a smile and the figure's arm sneaks on his waist and the figure's hat was removed, revealing dark, black hair, just like the night sky, “its about you, and about the stars.”

“you'll find him soon, but he'll find you first,” he whispers, and the figure slowly lifts the mask and beomgyu held on close to the figure as tears brim his eyes.

the mask was off, but beomgyu still couldn't see the figure's face. “do not fret...everything will be okay in time. nothing can separate you with the star. the crown and the star will meet again, and this time, nothing will stop them.”

beomgyu sniffles helplessly, feeling like drowning. the figure cupped the boy's cheeks and wipes his tears away.

“..wake up, choi beomgyu. it's time to find him.

and before everything went black, he felt soft lips on his own, and beomgyu had time to react and pull the figure closer and kisses him until everything went dark.

and all he could see was the stars staring at him before his eyes shut.

“ah....i still need to figure this out. i miss him...”

“you'll find him. i promise. he doesn't know yet, but he will.”

“...i'll try my best.”
