Chapter 13

"Levi?" You gasped. He was certainly not someone you expected to see again. His presence only raised more questions for you. What was he doing here? Did he kill that person? Was he with the other who killed Barry?

Your heart thumped against your chest as your breathing became ragged and you backed slowly away from him in the dark. Trying to move along a branch in the midnight darkness was not the smartest of moves, but you were not thinking straight as a million other thoughts raced around your head.

You slipped.

The bark scraped along your calf as you dropped, tearing open the thin material and grazing your skin. Leaves and twigs reached for you, tangling in your hair and lashing out for your arms. Tears pricked the corners of your eyes as you fell through the darkness; how could you be so foolish? You could fall to your death and your parents wouldn't even know.

A hand gripped around your arm, strong; it hurt slightly, but you had stopped falling. The other hand gripped a little way further up your arm. Slowly, you were pulled back up through the branches and leaves. Some scraped past previous cuts, making you hiss slightly in pain.

You felt the branch beneath you as you were set down. You gripped it to steady yourself, you didn't want to fall gain. Letting out a shaky sigh, you looked up slowly to the shadow that belonged to Levi.

"I would rather not save you for the third time in five minutes," He stated. "Can we try sitting for a moment?" At a small nod from you, he sighed slightly and then sat beside you. "I do not like sitting here; filthy. You don't know what has crawled across them."

You quickly lifted your hands up, scared something would wander across them. The sudden movement made you wobble a bit, but Levi placed a hand on your lower back to steady you. He slowly moved it away.

"Why are you here?" You asked slowly, trying to track him in the darkness. A break in the cover of the trees allowed some moonlight to filter through, settling over the two of you.

He looked down and wiped his hands with a small cloth, staining it slightly. He frowned and tucked it away, muttering how it needs to be cleaned later. He turned his stare towards you, "I could ask you the same thing." His gaze wandered up and down your frame, he frowned slightly. "Why are you dressed like that?"

"I wanted to help the people look for the killer. Do you know them?"

"We should go somewhere else to discuss this matter," He stood up suddenly and lowered a hand to pull you up to meet him. "I need a clean surrounding," he muttered, "and the smell of all this blood is getting to me."

You slowly took his hand. Cold. His hand closed around yours with a firm grip and slowly pulled you up to meet him. You made the mistake of looking down; it was hard to see in the darkness but you could make out the dark, grassy floor beneath you. It was so far down...

"Relax, Y/N," Levi muttered. Your eyes snapped back to the man before you and you soon became aware of your heartbeat. How rapid it had become. It began to slow down and you tried to block the height from your thoughts. "I will not let you fall again."

He made you get on his back, just like the first time he took you through the woods. You didn't hesitate to get on, you knew the speed at which he travelled and it just meant you could be away from the killer as soon as possible.

All you wanted to do was go home. You were tired. But, as much as you wanted to return to your bed, you wanted answers more and Levi had those answers.

The surroundings became familiar as you entered into your family's estate. It was silent, it was sleeping. He slowed his pace as he reached the balcony to your room. You slipped off his back and headed for the glass doors, he stood behind you and stretched slightly.

The doors were closed, but you had stashed a key in one of the pockets for safe keeping. You slipped your hand into the pocket but found nothing there. Did you put it in a different one? You checked another but the key wasn't there either. Did you lose it?

"I lost the key," you mumbled.

"How did you manage that?"

"I did fall from a tree."

He stood beside you, staring at the lock. He best down and reached into a pocked in the inside of his black coat. "I will get it back later. But for now," he mumbled, concentrating on what he was doing, "we will get in another way." Something clicked. He pushed the doors open.

"Did you just pick my lock?"

"No, I sang to it and it opened," he responded curtly, walking into your room and taking off his coat. He folded it neatly and set it down on the edge of your desk. He was wearing a white shirt which was neatly tucked into his sleek black trousers. You suddenly felt very under-dressed.

You followed in after him, closing the door behind you. Taking off the boots, you placed them next to your bed, making a mental reminder to deal with them later.

"Where are your medical supplies?" Levi asked suddenly, making you look up from the floor.

"Huh? Oh, they would probably be in Mr Smith's room," you responded slowly, standing up as you spoke. "Or, in the maid's quarters...I am not so sure."

He disappeared in a heartbeat and returned just as quick with a small bag in his right hand. With his left, he pressed his fingertips to your shoulder and guided you to sit down on the bed. The soft sheets were a welcoming touch. He lowered himself and gently took your leg, pushing the material out of the way of the graze; he opened the bag and started to work.

"So..." you began, "do you know those things?"

"Yes." He replied bluntly. "And no," he added. He pat a cloth against your cuts and scrapes to clean up the excess dirt and blood; you could tell he didn't exactly enjoy it. "They are not exactly like us."

"Us?" You interjected suddenly, quite surprised. He set the cloth down and glanced up at you for a brief second. "You mean, there are more like you?"

"Yes, of course. Do you think I make all these clothes myself?"

"Well...no, but it looks like you cut your hair yourself so I was unsure."

He shot you another look which made a slight blush grace your cheeks. "That is because I do cut my hair myself." You muttered a small apology and looked away as he continued. "As I was saying, they are not like us. They are not discreet, they are messy and whilst there are many of them, they never seem to work together."

"So what are they?"

"We do not know, but they threaten our existence and have destroyed entire colonies in the past."

He tied the knot in the bandage on your leg, and stood up, pulling out his own cloth to wipe his hands with again. He settled down in the armchair in your room, he had quite the habit of making himself comfortable in your room.

"So what is it doing here?" You asked, hoping to get further answers.

"Humans. To them you are play things, eating you is a secondary thought of theirs." A grimace crossed your face, should you really have asked that question? "And more are appearing, that is not the only one I have spotted in this area."

He stood up rather abruptly and slipped his coat back on. Looking over his shoulder, he asked one simple question, "are you not coming then?"

"Going where?"

"You want to live, do you not?" He was right, you did want to live. You stood up, slightly faltering due to the lingering pain in your leg, but managed to steady yourself. As you went to grab a coat, he stopped you; "the journey will not be long, Lady Y/N, and I am sure you will be properly dressed where we are going."
